This summer (2025), the Maltese government is planning to impose a significant cap on the number of tourists allowed to visit the Blue Lagoon near Comino. This is damaging the local ecosystem. The aim is to reduce the number of visitors by 50%.
According to statistics from last year, around 10,000 tourists visit the Blue Lagoon every day during the peak of July and August, putting enormous pressure on the small island.
Tourism Minister Ian Borg has pledged to improve the cleanliness of the island, modernise facilities and introduce stricter rules for commercial boat operators.
The upcoming restrictions will limit the number of passengers, ensuring that the island remains sustainable for both tourists and operators. The latest measures will apply exclusively to commercial boats, leaving private vessels untouched.
Activists and environmental organizations have repeatedly spoken out against the excessive commercialization of Comino, pointing to the noise, garbage, damage to nature, umbrellas and sunbeds that occupy almost all the free space.
This news is another hint that you should go to Malta outside the high season. Namely, in spring and autumn – when the water in the sea is already or still warm, and the air is not so hot.
