PR1 Vereda do Areeiro – a walking route in Madeira to reopen after two years of closure

The 7-kilometer PR1 Vereda do Areeiro trail returns after restoration work caused by the 2024 forest fire.

The PR1 Vereda do Areeiro route on Madeira, an exciting route connecting the three highest points of the Portuguese archipelago, will reopen in April after two years of closure for tourists.

The trail was forced to close in 2024 due to a forest fire, which damaged a significant part of it and required major improvements for safety.

The opening of PR1 Vereda do Areeiro coincides with the Madeira Island Ultra Trail race, which will take place from April 25 to 26, 2026.

Where the PR1 Vereda do Areeiro route passes

After the completion of restoration works, the 7-kilometer route, which passes through the peaks of the island Pico do Arieiro (1818 m), Pico das Torres (1851 m), and Pico Ruivo (1862 m), will soon again welcome tourists.

The high-mountain hiking trail starts from the Pico do Arieiro viewpoint. It takes approximately three and a half hours and goes through tunnels carved into volcanic rock, steep ridges, and showcases panoramic views above the clouds.

Along the route, you will encounter the Central Mountain Range — a protected area known for its unique landscapes and biodiversity. If you are lucky, you may see various species of birds.

Fee for trail maintenance and nature conservation

Tourists wishing to walk the trail, which will soon reopen, will be required to pay for access to it.

After the full opening of the PR1 Vereda do Areeiro route, a fee of 10.5 euros will be charged.

Since January 1, 2026, the Portuguese island has introduced new rules for hiking trails, including gradual regulation of visitor access throughout the day.

The cost of access to such trails as the 6-kilometer Vereda da Ponta de São Lourenço, Vereda do Pico Ruivo, and Levada do Rei is 4.50 euros if payment is made during booking. However, you can pay a slightly lower price – 3 euros if booking is done in advance.

Residents of Madeira are exempt from paying such fees, although pre-registration is mandatory for everyone.
