Alcudia, Mallorca – the best place to relax with children

Alcudia is a popular resort in the north of Mallorca with over 7 km of wide sandy beach, primarily attracting families with children. Everything is here for a comfortable stay: numerous cafes and restaurants along the shoreline, children’s entertainment, hotel spa zones, and plenty of water activities.

I share information about the resort’s beaches, what to do here on holiday, where to stay – what types of hotels the resort offers, how to get here from Mallorca airport.

Resort Description

Puerto de Alcúdia is the main resort center in the north of Mallorca. Here, picturesque beaches and modern infrastructure combine: hotels of various classes, bars, and shops.

The resort is very popular among families with children—the beaches here are shallow and wide, and there is a water park and children’s playgrounds nearby. At the same time, Alcúdia is also suitable for active recreation: from golf and tennis to windsurfing. Natural parks (for example, Parc Natural S’Albufera—a large reserve with lakes) and picturesque surroundings are ideal for cycling and hiking.

When is the best time to visit

Climate: winters here are mild, and summers are warm and dry. The best period to visit is from April to October, when sunny weather favors beach holidays. July–August are the hottest months (+25–30°C), when the sea warms up for swimming to +25°C, but this is also when there are the most tourists.

We visited at the beginning of October – the weather at this time is already quite changeable, with one day of heavy rain. But almost the entire week was sunny. The air temperature during the day in October equals the water temperature—+24 °C. Very comfortable—it’s possible to spend the whole day at the beach. However, winds can occur—you should know about this too. The bay is quite large and not completely sheltered from the wind.

Alcudia Beaches

There are three main beaches in Alcudia – Puerto de Alcudia, Playa de Muro, and Platja de Ca’n Picafort—very similar beaches along the shoreline. In total, it’s about 10 km. Some beaches have pine forests coming close to the sea. Some people hide in the pine shade during the heat and enjoy the aroma of pine trees.

Alcudia has some of the best beaches for children in Mallorca. The beaches are indeed very clean: blue water and fine white sand. And the gradual entry into the sea for 50–100 meters puts parents at ease and allows children to splash around as much as they like. Moreover, in June the water warms up better in such shallows and by the evening, it’s like fresh milk. Adults, of course, have to spend time to reach a reasonable depth for swimming and diving.

Water clarity—no less than 10 meters. You can often see fish and huge jellyfish. In the morning, there is almost no wind; by noon, it can pick up and create small waves, but not every day. However, wind does happen, and you sometimes have to chase after umbrellas. Though in summer this is rather rare and is tolerable.

Playa de Alcúdia and Playa de Muro

  • Playa de Alcúdia is a long, flat sandy beach (up to ~7 km) with shallow water, ideal for families. There are sun loungers and umbrellas, but also plenty of free space for those who want to relax without them. Volleyball courts on the sand.
  • Playa de Muro is the adjacent beach area, a bit wider, with white sand and clean water. The same infrastructure as on Alcudia Beach.

This long sandy shore (over 7 km along the whole bay) stretches from Can Picafort to Porto Alcudia. Most vacationers are concentrated closer to the town. Here the sea entry is wide and gentle, the sand fine and clean, with plenty of cafes, water attractions, showers, and beach umbrellas.

In summer, the beach is almost always crowded with tourists. The water entry is very shallow, gradual, and calm (perfect for kids). The lifeguards supervise the deeper part. There is boat rental and water entertainment.

Alcudia’s beaches have been awarded the “Blue Flag” for quality. The most convenient and compact beach is Playa de Alcúdia within the city (infrastructure, sun loungers, lifeguards), the others (especially S’Illot and Es Coll Baix) are more natural and lack services.

What to do in Alcudia

The old town of Alcudia is a must-see. This is an ancient walled part dating back to the 13th century: narrow cobbled streets, boutiques, apartments, churches. Every Sunday there is a large district market (on other days—smaller fairs), where you can buy souvenirs, clothes, cheese, and leather goods.

Nearby is the ancient Roman city of Pollentia (an interesting museum and ruins), which reveals the region’s history from the 1st century AD. From the old town to the beach is about 6 km (a shuttle bus runs, and there are bike lanes).

  • Many activities in the Alcudia area: Hydropark water park (slides, pools) for children.
  • Local tourist companies offer yacht trips from the port (to Cabrera Island, Palma de Mallorca, Formentor beach, etc.).
  • Boat and catamaran trips are a popular attraction: excursions along the coast depart from the port.
  • Cycling and hiking routes pass through La Albufera natural park (freshwater lakes where numerous bird species live).
  • The nightlife here is quieter than at the southern resorts. But at beachfront venues, you can sit in a bar and listen to live music in the evenings.
  • Go to Cap de Formentor—from Alcudia there is a bus there, which is very convenient, especially in high season when private cars are not allowed to the cape during the day.
