Where to stay in Milan – the best areas for tourists

Where to Stay in Milan: Best Neighborhoods and Tips

Milan is the city through which I most often enter Italy. It’s also convenient to fly from here to various corners of Europe. That’s why I’ve been to Milan more than once and always try to stay here for at least a few days to get a better feel for it. After all, it is the second most important city in Italy after Rome.

Milan clicks with some people, while others remain indifferent. But the city itself doesn’t care whether tourists like it or not. It’s the financial and industrial capital of Italy, plus a global fashion capital. Milan knows its worth – and tourists should be ready for that so they don’t panic when they see the local prices.

One of the biggest travel expenses is accommodation. And in Milan, it’s especially worth planning ahead so you don’t spend all your money on just one night’s stay.

So I’ll tell you about the best neighborhoods to stay in Milan – depending on your plans. Whether you’re just passing through, want to stroll the city, go shopping, or dive into the cultural scene – there are options for every taste.

TOP 10 places to go from Milan for one day

Briefly About the Five Best Areas for Tourists

Milan is a huge city divided into nine zones, which are further split into numerous districts and neighborhoods. Each has its own vibe and features. Getting around is easy – public transport works great, but as everywhere, the best way to experience the city is on foot.

If this is your first time in Milan, then Centro Storico (Historic Center) is the best place to stay. All the main attractions are here, and it’s the most convenient district in terms of transport: from here you can easily reach both the central station (Milano Centrale) and the Malpensa and Bergamo airports.

If you’re into parties and nightlife, head to the Navigli district in the south. It’s always lively here, with trendy bars and clubs open until morning.

Love stylish places and authentic Milanese atmosphere? Then go to Brera or Fiera/San Siro – neighborhoods north of the center with luxury shops and green parks. These are best if you’ve been to Milan before and plan to stay at least a week.

To the east lies Città Studi – a student area with plenty of budget cafes, bars, and hotels. Here you can soak in the youthful vibe and relax with an afternoon cappuccino while watching the city buzz.

And if you arrive late at night or leave early in the morning, consider hotels near Malpensa or Bergamo airports – Milan’s main air gateways for travelers.

Centro Storico – If You’re in Milan for the First Time

Centro Storico is the very heart of Milan. Here you’ll find the city’s main historical and cultural landmarks: the majestic Duomo Cathedral, the legendary La Scala opera house, and the bustling main square.

If it’s your first time in Milan, this is the perfect place to stay. It has everything – from chic boutiques and cozy cafes to exquisite restaurants and amazing museums.

Another advantage – the area is largely pedestrian, so you can stroll around and enjoy the atmosphere without relying on transport. But if you want to go further, the metro (lines M1 and M3) will quickly take you anywhere in the city.
