Most tourists come to Barcelona for the sea, Gaudí architecture, and the atmospheric streets of the Gothic Quarter. But if you love nature, beautiful panoramas, and hiking, then you should dedicate at least one day to Montserrat – one of the most impressive places in Catalonia.
It is here, among the fantastic rock formations, that the famous Montserrat Monastery is located. And around it there are dozens of kilometers of hiking trails that allow you to see Catalonia from a bird’s-eye view.
If you have at least three full days in Barcelona, I recommend dedicating one day to Montserrat. It will become one of the best adventures of your trip.
Where is Montserrat located

Do not confuse Montserrat with the Caribbean island of the same name. The Catalan Montserrat is located about 60 km northwest of Barcelona.
The name of the mountain range translates as “sawed mountain.” When you see it for the first time, it becomes clear why: hundreds of rounded rocks look as if someone carefully cut them out with a giant saw.
It is these unique rocks that made Montserrat one of the symbols of Catalonia.
How to get to Montserrat from Barcelona
Getting to Montserrat is quite easy even without a car. The most convenient way is to use public transport.
Train + cable car Aeri de Montserrat

The most spectacular option.
- From Plaça Espanya station in Barcelona, take the suburban train R5 line towards Manresa.
- Get off at Aeri de Montserrat station.
- Transfer to the Aeri de Montserrat cable car.
In just 5 minutes, the cabin will lift you to the monastery above the gorge and rocks. The views along the way are incredible, so many travelers choose this option.
Train + rack railway Cremallera
A more comfortable way.
- From Plaça Espanya, take the same R5 train.
- Get off at Monistrol de Montserrat station.
- Transfer to the Cremallera rack railway.
The ascent takes about 15 minutes. The windows are large, so you can take plenty of beautiful photos along the way up.
Bus from Barcelona
Direct buses also run between Barcelona and Montserrat.
This option is convenient for those who do not like transfers. The bus brings you almost directly to the monastery, although the journey takes a bit longer than by train.
By car
If you’ve rented a car, you can reach Montserrat in about an hour.
There are large paid parking lots next to the monastery. But during the season and on weekends, spaces can fill up quickly, so it’s worth arriving early.
How to get to Montserrat from Barcelona Airport

If you arrive in Barcelona early in the morning and do not plan to stay in the city, you can go to Montserrat straight from the airport.
I did just that when I had a daytime layover in Barcelona. I arrived at the airport, took the bus, and transferred to the R50/R5 train to Montserrat. Instead of waiting for my next flight at the airport, I walked the trails and visited the Montserrat Monastery.
Option 1. Metro or bus to Plaça Espanya
The simplest way:
- go from the airport by metro to Plaça d’Espanya;
- take the R5 train;
- continue the route via cable car or rack railway.
Total travel time is about 2 hours.
Option 2. Bus + train R50
A slightly faster way (that’s the one I used):
- take bus L77, which stops near terminal T2
- get to Estació FGC Sant Boi stop
- cross the street and get on the R50 train, then go either to Aeri de Montserrat (funicular) or to Monistrol de Montserrat station, where you transfer to a rack cable car.
It is about 55 km from the airport to Montserrat.
The trip takes about 1 hour depending on traffic.
Tip! Check in advance about public transport strikes in Barcelona and Catalonia before planning such a trip during a long layover between flights. If there is a strike – don’t take risks, it’s better to postpone everything for another time.
Why you should visit Montserrat

Montserrat is not just a monastery or a mountain.
Here, several reasons for travel come together at once:
- unique mountain landscapes you won’t find anywhere else in Catalonia;
- the famous monastery with almost a thousand-year history;
- the statue of the Black Madonna – the main shrine of the region;
- dozens of observation platforms;
- wonderful hiking routes;
- the opportunity to spend a day in nature far from the city noise.
Even if you do not plan to walk a lot, the views alone are already worth the trip.
What to see at Montserrat
Basilica and the Black Madonna

Be sure to plan a visit to the basilica to see the sculpture of the Black Madonna and enjoy the boys’ choir performance.
The main attraction of the complex is the statue of Our Lady of Montserrat, which Catalans call La Moreneta. According to legend, shepherds found it in a cave as early as the 9th century. Many people want to see the shrine, so in season there may be queues.
Montserrat Monastery

The Benedictine monastery was founded in the 11th century. Today it is not only a religious center but also a pilgrimage destination and one of the most famous landmarks of Catalonia. Even if you are not interested in history or religion, it is worth strolling around the grounds and enjoying the atmosphere.
Montserrat Museum
Many tourists are surprised, but the museum here is truly impressive. The collection features works by Picasso, Dalí, Caravaggio, Monet, and other famous artists. If the weather suddenly gets worse, the museum will be a great alternative to hiking.
Sant Joan Funicular
This is where most popular hiking routes start. The funicular takes tourists to a significant height, from where some of the best panoramas of Montserrat open up. Even if you are not planning a long hike, it’s worth going up at least for the views.
The best hiking routes of Montserrat

There are plenty of hiking trails here for all levels of fitness. The trails are well marked, so it’s quite hard to get lost.
Sant Jeroni
Sant Jeroni is the most popular peak for hiking, offering a 360-degree panoramic view. Although a map will be useful, if you arrive there in the morning, you can just start walking and explore the trails that interest you, since there are enough signs here to find your way back to the monastery.
- Length: about 7 km
- Time: 3–4 hours
- Difficulty level: medium
Sant Jeroni is the highest peak of the massif (1236 m). At the top, a 360-degree panoramic view awaits you. In clear weather, you can see the Pyrenees, Barcelona, and even the Mediterranean Sea. This is the route I would recommend for your first acquaintance with Montserrat.
Route to the Sant Miquel Cross

- Length: about 2 km
- Time: 45 minutes – 1 hour
- Difficulty: easy
The perfect option for those who want to see beautiful views without a long ascent.
Camí de les Ermites
One of the most interesting routes for history lovers. The trail passes by ancient caves and hermits’ cells where monks once lived.
Hike to Santa Cova

This is where, according to legend, the Black Madonna was found. The route is easy and suitable even for families with children.
How to spend a whole day in Montserrat
An approximate plan may look like this:
08:00 – departure from Barcelona.
09:30 – arrival at the monastery.
10:00 – visit the basilica and Black Madonna.
11:00 – ascend by Sant Joan funicular.
11:30–15:00 – hiking to Sant Jeroni summit.
15:00 – lunch at a restaurant or picnic with a view of the mountains.
16:00 – walk around the monastery grounds or visit the museum.
18:00 – return to Barcelona.
If you don’t want to organize this trip yourself – you can always buy a ready-made excursion to Montserrat.
Where is the best place to stay in Barcelona for a trip to Montserrat
Since all trains to Montserrat depart from Plaça Espanya station, it’s most convenient to choose accommodation nearby.
Eixample District
One of the best options for tourists. From here it’s easy to get to Plaça d’Espanya by metro or even on foot. Plus there are many restaurants, cafes, and landmarks nearby.
Hotels in Eixample district:
- Condes de Barcelona – The hotel has modern stylish decor.
- Axel Hotel Barcelona & Spa – attention! this hotel is adults only.
- Royal Passeig de Gracia – Great price for the location in Eixample!
Plaça d’Espanya District
The most convenient location for an early departure to Montserrat. In the morning you can literally walk to the station in a few minutes and catch the first train.
Hotels near Plaça d’Espanya:
- Arco Barcelona Hotel – comfortable and clean rooms, close location to stop 46 for the airport bus, as well as near the metro and the R5 train station.
- Occidental Barcelona 1929 – A wonderful cozy hotel with comfortable rooms and everything you need. There is parking (separate fee). It’s very convenient to travel around the city from the hotel as the metro is nearby.
- Onix Fira – comfortable and nice rooms, great location near Plaça d’Espanya, well-developed infrastructure.

Useful tips

- Arrive at Montserrat as early as possible, especially on weekends.
- Bring enough water – it is very hot here in summer. And although there is a shop, prices there are very touristy.
- For hiking, you need comfortable shoes – sneakers with good tread are enough (don’t go hiking in sandals or flip-flops).
- Even in summer, the peaks can be chilly and windy – have a sweater with you. Also, sometimes a cloud can sit on the mountain, making visibility nearly zero.
- If you plan to walk a lot, go up by Sant Joan funicular – this will save your strength for further hiking (provided it’s running – I wasn’t lucky, so I hiked up myself).
Montserrat is a place where you can combine beautiful nature, history, culture, and active recreation. For me, it’s one of the most interesting day trips from Barcelona, letting you see a completely different Catalonia – without beaches, but with incredible panoramas and the atmosphere of real mountains.
