Where is the best place to stay in Malta

Looking for a location where exactly to stay in Malta? Malta has a huge selection of hotels, private guesthouses and apartments. You have to decide where to book your accommodation depending on what you plan to do in Malta.

It is the compact location of cities on the islands that allows you to avoid wasting precious time on travel and logistics. Hotels, restaurants, and natural and cultural sites are within proximity to each other. This is an undoubted advantage of the Maltese archipelago and simplifies logistics from the place of residence.

Valletta – a historical gem and transportation hub of Malta

If you plan to travel around the islands of Malta and Gozo by public transport, it is better to stay in Valletta hotels. A large number of buses run from here to the island. You will be interested in spending time in the capital and its neighboring historical cities, the so-called Tree cities –Vittoriosa (or Birgu ),Senglea and Cospicua.

Visit the neighboring ancient capital of Malta, Mdina, where you can catch the feeling that time has stopped. From Valletta, you can quickly reach the island of Gozo by high-speed ferry, and nearby are the more modern Sliema and St. Julians, where you can find good shopping and entertainment in nightclubs and bars. Both buses and boats run between Valletta and these cities at the price of public transportation (2 euros).

Accommodation in Valletta

There is a large selection of hotels and facilities here – prices are slightly higher compared to other cities on the island. But you will be in the epicenter of events if you come, for example, to a festival or carnival, as was the case in my case.

I advise you to look at the following hotels located in the center of Valletta:

Sliema – modern hotels and shopping

For branded clothes and shoes, it’s better to go to Sliema. It is located opposite Valletta, on the other side of Marsamchett Bay. There are many shops and shopping centers here. Most of the shops are concentrated on the waterfront and the streets of Triq Bisazza and Triq It-Torri.

The Plaza Shopping Center, Malta’s largest shopping center, is located on Bizazza Street, with more than thirty shops, fast food restaurants and coffee shops under one roof. The Point Shopping mall, a huge department store with shops of famous brands, is located nearby.

Hotels in Sliema are mostly modern, if you compare them with hotels in Valletta, located in the old buildings of the capital. In Sliema you can also find hotels with swimming pools – for a summer vacation this is a great combination of relaxation and entertainment. Because there are very few beaches in this part of Malta.

Hotels in Sliema

I recommend looking at the following hotels if you are planning to stay in Sliema:

  • The Sliema Suites≫ – modern apartments in Sliema with a rooftop pool. The rooms have their own kitchen, nice beds, very clean.
  • Palazzo Violetta Boutique Hotel≫ – a boutique hotel in the old part of Sliema, with a small pool, patio and spacious rooms.
  • Plaza Regency Hotels ≫ is a hotel on the first line of the Sliema promenade, with a beautiful view and a large rooftop pool.

If you are looking for more budget accommodation, look towards the neighboring town (rather, it’s an area near Sliema) – Gzira:

  • Strand Suites by NEU Collective≫ – Great views, clean rooms, nice pool across the street and close to bus stops and many places in Malta are easily accessible by bus or boat.
  • Urban Rooms by NEU Collective≫ – Comfortable beds, showers with good pressure, delicious breakfasts with unrealistically beautiful views and a rooftop terrace with a jacuzzi, the opportunity to visit the Aqualuna pool is included in the price.

St. Julians – nightlife in Malta

The second most popular place near Valletta is St. Julian’s, which can be reached on foot along the promenade from Sliema. The most popular part of St. Julian’s is Pacheville, a concentration of bars, discos and gaming centers.

The small town of Pacheville is located on a peninsula between the Gulf of St. George and Spinola Bay. It’s more like the St. Julians neighborhood – their buildings are so tightly merged. During the day it is quite quiet, but in the evening the half-empty streets come to life. Paceville is turning into the center of Malta’s nightlife and entertainment scene.

It is a district of trendy discos, bars, and various entertainment venues. In the summer, young people from all over the world gather here to indulge in unbridled fun in nightclubs located side by side on St. George’s Road, Rita Steps and Dragonara Road. In addition, you can visit IMax cinemas and the Hard Rock Cafe. Gambling enthusiasts have the opportunity to make a fortune at the Dragonara Palace and Portomaso casinos located in the five-star Hilton and Westin Dragonara Resort hotels.

Hotels in St. Julian’s

  • Antoniel Suites≫ – uar location right in the center of St. Julian’s, close to all restaurants and cafes, but on a quiet street. The price includes access to the beach club, located 450 meters from the hotel on the beach in St. Julian’s.
  • SO City Hotel Adults Only≫ – is a modern design hotel located in the epicenter of nightlife in St. Julian’s. Walking distance to everything: restaurants, bus stop, excursion pick-up points, shopping center and Portomaso port. If you’re not looking for quiet, but rather want to be in the center of all the action, this is the perfect place!
  • Mercure St. Julian’s Malta≫ – good location in the center of St. Julian’s, 100 m to the bus station. Very clean and modern, comfortable beds, very good breakfasts.

Beach towns in Malta

If you want to go to the beach, staying in the northern part of Malta is ideal. There are several large beaches and a number of all-inclusive resorts. As well as hotels and apartments located right on the beach or in the immediate vicinity.

These cities are Mellieħa, St. Paul’s Bay, Bugibba and Qawra, suitable for those who are looking for accommodation for a beach vacation in Malta.

If it’s a beach vacation, then choose apartments and hotels closer to the beaches, for example, in Mellieħa Bay:
