6 destinations for a beach holiday in Europe in April

With the onset of winter cold, we begin to long for sunny days and spring break. So where in Europe is it hot in April? Where you can find consistently sunny weather, sunbathe on the beach and swim in the sea.

I suggest places where, on average, the water is already warming up to +18-20 ℃. Choose and plan your vacation from this list of the hottest places in Europe in April.

Malta

Average water temperature: 19°C

Malta is not considered a very beachy destination, but there are beaches there. And the water in April is already warm because the archipelago is located quite close to Africa. I advise April to combine research in Malta with a beach vacation. At this time, it’s not too hot – the temperature reaches +25°C, so it’s still quite comfortable to walk around the city and not hide during siesta. And the water is already getting warmer – you can swim in crystal clear water during the day.

  • Golden Bay Beach, located on the northwest coast of Malta. It is quite large in size with yellow sand and blue water.
  • Ghajn Tuffieha Bay – which has a second name, Riviera. It is considered to be wilder, the sandy strip near this beach is already than at Golden Bay. To get to Ghajn Tuffieha Bay, you will have to overcome 100 steps.
  • Gadir Beach is the largest sandy beach in Malta, located in the bay of the same name. There is a long strip of sand, calm sea thanks to the protection of the bay, and a very gentle entrance to the water – it’s great for families with small children. The city of Gadir is also located near the beach, with a large selection of hotels and apartments.
  • Blue Lagoon Beach on Comino Island has clear blue-turquoise water and white sand. The strip of sandy beach there is very small, and there are a lot of people who want to come here, people swim even in winter.

Cyprus

Average water temperature: 19°C

I already mentioned Cyprus when I wrote about the warm beaches of Europe in October. And now I also remember it because the island is very well located in the east of the Mediterranean Sea. In mid-spring, the water on the coast of Cyprus warms up to about 20°C.

But Cyprus is not only about beaches. It has a rich history and culture that dates back thousands of years. Along with the beaches, tourists can explore the ancient ruins of Kourion, an important city in ancient Cyprus, or visit the Tombs of the Kings, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Cyprus has a huge selection of beaches where you can lay down your towel. There are more than 50 Blue Flag beaches on the island, which are known for their cleanliness and safety.

  • The beaches of Paphos in the western part of the island offer beautiful sandy stretches of turquoise water. The former capital also has a wonderful architectural and historical heritage.
  • Not far from it is the famous Aphrodite Beach with a beautiful nature reserve .
  • On the beaches of Protarasyou will find the warmest water on the island.
  • Nissi Beach, with its white sand and blue water, will appeal to partygoers.

Madeira

Average water temperature: 19°C

If you’re looking for sun and warm sea in Europe, Madeira probably doesn’t quite fit the bill. Clouds often fly here, and there are very few sandy beaches, but the air temperature is very pleasant – +23-25°C. Madeira is a Portuguese island and archipelago of the same name located in the Atlantic Ocean near the Canary Islands. But unlike the beaches of Algarve where the water does not warm up too much even in summer, Madeira has an eternal spring.

In April, in addition to traditional hiking in the picturesque levadas and mountains, Madeira offers relatively warm water on beaches and stone pools with sea water.

  • If you have children, head to Lido, the largest swimming pool complex in the region, located in Funchal.
  • Formosa Beach (Praia Formosa ) – located in Funchal, a pebble beach where there may be waves.
  • Prainha do Caniçal, a beach in a small bay with black sand, is ideal for those who like places away from the crowd.
  • Prainha do Caniçal is a very beautiful sandy beach, closed from the ocean waves.
  • Doca do Cavacas Natural Pools are small natural stone pools located in Funchal.

Turkey

Average water temperature: 20°C

I was vacationing in the south of Turkey in mid-April. What can I say? I got sunburned and enjoyed swimming in the sea. The sea water is pleasantly invigorating, the air is very fresh in the morning, but in the afternoon you need to put on SPF-50. Because without it, you’ll be sitting in a hotel with red skin instead of enjoying a vacation on the beach.

Where is the water so warm that it is pleasant to swim in Turkey?

  • The beaches near Antalya – for example, I vacationed in Belek where the fine golden sand is very nice.
  • Nearby are the same beaches of Side – of course, all-inclusive hotels line the coast.
  • But if you prefer city life, look towards the beaches of Antalya. Here you can stay in a city hotel or rent an apartment.
  • For those who want the water to be 100% warm, I advise you to choose the sandy beaches of Alanya. In April, the water there becomes even warmer, because people start swimming at the end of March.

Book a hotel on the coast of Antalya:

  • PEARLY HOTEL≫ – is a magnificent city hotel with a private rooftop pool and sea views near Konyaaltı Plajları Beach in Antalya.
  • Calista Luxury Resort≫ – is a super all-inclusive hotel on Belek Beach, I vacationed here in April – I highly recommend it.
  • Aria Riva Apart Hotel≫ – is a beautiful apart-hotel on the shore near Cleopatra Beach, with good sand and clear water.

Spain, Canary Islands

Average water temperature: 20°C

The Canary Islands, located off the coast of Morocco, offer a bit of summer even in early spring. In this area of Spain, the water temperature in April is about 20 degrees. And the air temperature is around +23-25°C– with such a difference, you don’t really feel the difference of a little cool water.

Where is the best place to swim in the Canaries? Here are some particularly popular beaches:

  • Sotavento is a beach with turquoise water, located between the Costa Calma and Jandia, in the south of the island of Fuerteventura.
  • Cofete is a stunning sandy stretch of land in Fuerteventurawhere director Ridley Scott filmed his biblical Exodus: Gods and Kings.
  • Papagayo Beach on the island of Lanzarote is quite inaccessible, but definitely worth the trip.
  • Las Cristianos is a beach in the south of Tenerife, although very popular, it’s also not bad.

Sicily

In Sicily by car

Average water temperature: 18°C

Sicily is a great destination in April, with average daytime temperatures around 20°C. Travelers can enjoy beautiful beaches, historical sites, and delicious cuisine. We also went to Sicily in the spring – it was very beautiful and already warm enough to lie on the beach and run into the cool water.

Sicily is washed by three seas at once: the Tyrrhenian Sea to the north, the Mediterranean Sea to the south, and the Ionian Sea to the west. Due to the large size of the island and the presence of a volcano, there are sandy, volcanic, rocky beaches and picturesque lagoons hidden from prying eyes. It would take two weeks to explore everything. I would like to note the most popular and unusual places for seaside recreation.

  • San Vito Lo Copo is located in a bay that protects the beach from the waves, not far from Palermo. There is blue water, white sand, a gentle entrance, boats and a mountain hanging over the northwestern part of the beach – it looks very romantic, there are few people in spring.
  • Mondello is another sandy beach near Palermo: the two capes of Monte Piligrimo and Monte Gallo form a quiet bay with a wide sandy spit. Here, calm warm sea, clean white sand, hotels and villas, cafes and restaurants located along the entire spit frame Mondello Beach.
  • Cefalu is a beach in a small town of the same name 20 km from Palermo, also famous for its clear water, gentle entrance and white sand.
  • Li Cuti Beach on the outskirts of Catania will surprise you with its huge size, emptiness and combination of clear water and black beach.
  • Isola Bella in Taorminais a mixed sand and pebble beach, which consists of two parts separated by a small island. It is considered one of the most beautiful beaches in Sicily. A free and well-maintained beach with many restaurants along it, offering great views of the bay.

Book accommodation in Sicily:

  • B&B Le Biciclette≫ – is a guesthouse in the town of San Vito Lo Copo – a beach that you definitely saw in the photo on Instagram.
  • UNAHOTELS Capotaormina≫ – is an incredible hotel in Taormina by the sea overlooking the beach from its private pool.
