Baku <\/strong>\u2014 a sand-colored city. Fortress walls surround skyscrapers, while fashionable hotels stand alongside old courtyards where men still enthusiastically play backgammon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Within minutes, Baku wins you over with one of the most beautiful airports, where, besides aesthetics, everything is provided for passengers’ comfort. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Everything here is bright and grand in the center, while the outskirts remain just as slightly worn. The people are warm-hearted, the cuisine is delicious, and the bright sun shines, reflecting in the Caspian Sea’s iridescent film. Over the past decades, the city has flourished and transformed into a true metropolis\u2014with broad avenues, skyscrapers, five-star hotels, and green parks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I have been to Baku, and I can say this: this city is worth more than simply rushing through in one day. I would set aside at least 2\u20133 days for Baku, or four if you also want to see unusual places around the capital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By plane from Europe<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

One of the most convenient options is to travel from many European airports and fly to Baku from there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is worth checking flights for example from Warsaw<\/strong>. There are both direct and connecting flights between Warsaw and Baku. A direct flight takes approximately 4 hours<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Via Istanbul<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Another convenient way is to fly to Baku via Istanbul<\/strong>. This is especially convenient if there is no good direct flight from Poland or Chi\u0219in\u0103u on the dates you need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How to get from Baku Airport to the city center<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Heydar Aliyev International Airport is located approximately 20 km from central Baku<\/strong>. The most convenient way to get to the city is by the Aeroexpress<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Buses run from Terminals 1 and 2 to the 28 May<\/strong> district, near the central railway station and metro. The journey takes approximately 30 minutes. During the day, buses depart every 20 minutes; at night, every 45 minutes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A single trip costs 1.50 AZN<\/strong>, if you purchase a single-use BAKU KART. With a reusable card, the Aero Express fare is 1.30 AZN.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For a tourist, in my opinion, this is the best option in terms of value for money and convenience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Taxi from the airport<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The official Baku Taxi<\/strong> operates at the airport. Uber<\/strong> and Bolt<\/strong> are also available. It is better to order a car through the app after leaving the terminal and use the official pickup points. If you arrive at night or have a lot of luggage, a taxi will be much more convenient than the bus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My advice:<\/strong> if you arrive during the day, choose the Aeroexpress; if it is late evening or night, take a taxi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When to go to Baku<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

For a sightseeing trip, I consider April\u2013May and September\u2013October<\/strong> the best times. During this period, the exhausting summer heat has either not yet arrived or has already passed, making it much more comfortable to walk around the city and go on excursions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Baku, it is important to consider not only the temperature but also the wind. The city is called the city of winds, and even a warm day can feel completely different when a strong wind blows in from the Caspian Sea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to climate data, the average maximum temperature is approximately +7\u00b0C in January, +16\u00b0C in April, +22\u00b0C in May, +27\u00b0C in June, +31\u00b0C in July, +30\u00b0C in August, +26\u00b0C in September, and +20\u00b0C in October.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Weather in Baku by season<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Winter, December\u2013February<\/strong>
Cool and windy, but quite suitable for a city trip. During the day, it is usually around +7\u201310\u00b0C, while at night the temperature may drop to +2\u20135\u00b0C. There are few tourists, so this is a good time for those who want to explore the museums and Old City at a leisurely pace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Spring, March\u2013May<\/strong>
One of the most pleasant periods. March is still cool, April is already around +16\u00b0C, and in May the temperature rises to approximately +22\u00b0C. Perfect for long walks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Summer, June\u2013August<\/strong>
Hot and very sunny. In July and August, the average daytime temperature is around +30\u00b0C, although some days are considerably hotter. On the other hand, there is almost no precipitation. If you are planning a beach holiday, summer makes sense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Autumn, September\u2013November<\/strong>
September is a wonderful time for Baku: it is still warm, around +26\u00b0C, but not as exhausting as in July. In October, it is around +20\u00b0C; in November, approximately +14\u00b0C.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My choice is May, September, or the first half of October.<\/strong> We traveled to Baku in September, when there was no longer intense heat, so it was comfortable to walk around the city, and it was still possible to swim in the sea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Old City of Icherisheher\u2014Baku as it almost no longer exists<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

It is best to begin exploring Baku with the Old City \u2014 Icheri-Sheher<\/strong>, where you can still see Eastern medieval architecture. Behind the fortress walls lies the real medieval Baku: narrow streets, stone houses, small courtyards, mosques, caravanserais, souvenir shops, and caf\u00e9s.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

You should set aside at least 2\u20133 hours to get acquainted with the Old City, but I would not hurry. The most interesting thing here is simply to walk around without a route.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maiden Tower<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

One of Baku\u2019s main symbols. The tower stands practically next to the promenade by the Caspian Sea and is part of the historical ensemble of Icheri-Sheher. Its purpose still gives rise to numerous legends and assumptions. There is a museum inside, and the upper platform offers a panorama of the Old City and modern Baku.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Palace of the Shirvanshahs<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Another main attraction of the Old City is the palace complex of the rulers of the Shirvanshah state<\/strong>. Here you can see the palace, mausoleum, mosque, Divan-khane courtyard, and other structures of the medieval complex.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Museum of Miniature Books<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In Icheri-Sheher<\/strong> there are numerous museums, souvenir shops, caf\u00e9s, and residential buildings where ordinary people live among the fortress walls. We wandered into one of the strangest \u2014 the Museum of Miniature Books<\/strong>. It houses a huge collection of small books brought literally from all over the world. The museum was entered in the  Guinness World Records  as the world\u2019s largest collection of miniature books. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is exactly the place to visit if you have already seen the main attractions and feel like seeing something unusual.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mosques, caravanserais, and old streets<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Do not limit yourself to a few \u201cmain\u201d attractions. In Icheri-Sheher, it is interesting simply to turn into the side lanes. Here you can see old caravanserais, mosques, traditional houses with stone balconies, and courtyards where life continues just as it did decades ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is easy to get lost in the narrow streets leading deep into the old city: the walls rise high, small balconies overhang above your head, and block out the sun. Local merchants sit on chairs in front of the entrances to souvenir shops, enthusiastically play backgammon, and seem to be waiting for a lost tourist to start a conversation and lead them out of the old city\u2019s labyrinth. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite its museum status, cats lazily warm themselves in the sun\u2019s reflections in the Old City, freshly washed laundry flutters in the wind \u2014 the historic center continues to live an ordinary life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here, too, cats lazily bask in the sun on the crooked streets, and you can easily get lost, just like Gesha \u2014 the main character of \u201cThe Diamond Arm<\/strong>\u201d. It was here that the famous scene \u2014 \u201cShurt pobery!<\/strong>\u201d \u2014 was filmed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Modern Baku \u2014 architecture of the future<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If Old Baku transports you to the Middle Ages, the modern part of the city looks as if it were built for a futuristic film. And it is this contrast that I like most about Baku.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Flame Towers \u2014 Flaming Towers<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Three enormous skyscrapers on a hill have become one of the symbols of modern Baku. They are clearly visible from almost anywhere in the city during the day, while in the evening light animations appear on their fa\u00e7ades. The best place to admire the Flame Towers is Highland Park<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is worth coming here toward evening. The observation decks offer a panorama of Baku, the Caspian Sea, and the modern city center. The Martyrs\u2019 Lane<\/strong> is nearby, and you can walk down to the lower part of the city or take the funicular.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Baku Boulevard<\/h2>\n\n\n

Baku\u2019s seaside boulevard is made for leisurely promenades, but swimming in the sea is unlikely to be enjoyable \u2014 the oil pumps along the shore remind you that oil is more important here than seaside recreation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It stretches along the Caspian Sea, and you can spend several hours here, especially in the evening when the heat subsides.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The boulevard is home to interesting modern buildings and cultural sites, including the National Carpet Museum<\/strong>, whose building itself is shaped like a rolled-up carpet. The museum houses more than 6,000 Azerbaijani carpets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is also the Baku Ferris wheel, the YARAT Museum of Contemporary Art, and other places you can visit during your walk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
