People come here not only for the warm sea and beautiful beaches, but also for incredible mountain landscapes, ancient palaces of the Minoan civilization, picturesque gorges, and cozy Venetian towns.

This is a place where you can combine a lazy beach holiday with eventful trips. In the morning, you can swim in the turquoise Balos lagoon, stroll through the old streets of Chania in the afternoon, and dine at a family taverna in a small mountain village in the evening.

This is why many tourists return to Crete more than once. It’s almost impossible to see the entire island in one trip — it stretches over 250 kilometers from west to east, and the drive between the farthest points takes about five hours even without stops.

In this guide, I will tell you when is the best time to go to Crete, which resort to choose for a sea holiday, whether it’s worth renting a car, and which sights you can’t miss.

Recommended reading: Santorini – guide to the island for independent travelers

When is the best time to go to Crete

The beach season in Crete lasts much longer than at most other European resorts. Air temperatures often exceed +30 °C, the sea warms up to +26…+28 °C, and it rarely rains. This is the ideal period for those coming only for the sea and sun.

Despite the island’s enormous popularity, Crete does not feel overcrowded. Because of the island’s size, tourists disperse among dozens of resorts and hundreds of beaches. So even in high season you can find quite peaceful spots.

The only downside of summer is higher prices for hotels, car rentals, and air tickets. If you’re planning a vacation in July or August, it’s best to book accommodation and a car several months in advance and buy tickets ahead of time.

May, June, September, and October

In my opinion, this is the best time to get to know the island.

Temperatures are already comfortable for swimming, but there is no exhausting heat. During this period it’s much more pleasant to stroll through historic cities, visit archaeological sites, hike gorges, or drive mountain roads.

Another big plus — noticeably fewer tourists. However, the itinerary will be quite packed.

The ideal option is to spend 9–10 days here.

This allows you to take your time, devote several days to the sea, and the rest to island excursions. This way you can feel the true atmosphere of Crete, not just check the most popular sites off your list.

Because of the island’s size, you shouldn’t plan for long daily drives. It’s much easier to split your stay between two or even three resorts.

For example:

3–4 nights in Heraklion or its surroundings;

2–3 nights in Rethymnon;

3–4 nights in Chania.

This route allows you to explore virtually the entire northern coast of the island without rushing.

How to get to Crete

Crete has two international airports — in Heraklion and Chania.
