\u0160ibenik<\/strong> in Croatia is a true pearl of the Croatian Adriatic and one of the most interesting cities on the Dalmatian coast<\/strong>. I liked that a holiday in this city is not limited to strolls through the old town. There are great beaches around \u0160ibenik, from here it’s convenient to reach Krka National Park<\/strong>, and not far from \u0160ibenik there are excellent wineries where you can taste Croatian wines. So if you have a car, you can organize a very interesting vacation for yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, that\u2019s what I\u2019ll tell you about, because \u0160ibenik<\/strong> is worth your attention also because it\u2019s not as crowded with tourists as Dubrovnik or Split. That’s why accommodation prices don’t skyrocket. And there’s really a lot to see here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Parking<\/strong> in \u0160ibenik, especially around the old town, is very limited. However, \u201cCity Parking\u201d offers affordable parking. It\u2019s even free in the off-season!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The city of \u0160ibenik<\/strong> in Croatia is located in \u0160ibenik-Knin County in Dalmatia \u2013 about 30 kilometers from Primo\u0161ten<\/strong><\/a>. \u0160ibenik is especially known for its charming car-free old town, built on a hill with over 2,800 steps, also known as the “City of Stairs.” <\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the surroundings of \u0160ibenik are also worth attention, attracting visitors with numerous sights. Not far from the city flows the Krka River, best known for its Krka National Park<\/strong>. In addition, \u0160ibenik is considered one of the best starting points for boat trips to the Kornati National Park, and it has also become very popular as a summer resort<\/strong>. Thanks to the Amadria Park resort<\/strong>, fantastic hotels, apartments, and campgrounds, this region attracts more and more visitors. \u0160ibenik, as the oldest town on the Adriatic, offers a wide variety of wonderful sights and interesting things. Many attractions are located directly in the center and can be easily visited during a city tour. But there is also much of interest in the surroundings that is worth seeing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u0160ibenik Cathedral<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Since 2000, the Cathedral of St. James in \u0160ibenik<\/strong> has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site<\/strong> and is also the most famous attraction in \u0160ibenik. This masterpiece shines with hundreds of details and is stunning both outside and inside. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The cathedral was built over almost one hundred years and is made entirely of stone, including limestone and marble<\/strong> from the island of Bra\u010d<\/strong>. Pay particular attention to the many exquisite sculptures on the exterior, and according to legend, the architects also immortalized themselves in some of the stone heads of the bourgeoisie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Main Square, Republic Square and City Loggia<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

A wonderful highlight of the city, and probably one of \u0160ibenik\u2019s most important attractions, is Republic Square<\/strong> and the city loggia<\/strong>. They are located right next to the \u0160ibenik Cathedral, and you will be amazed by their beautiful facade and many details. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The builder of the cathedral, Mr. Juraj Dalmatinac, is immortalized as a statue on Republic Square. The city loggia<\/strong> itself used to serve as the city authority\u2019s residence. Today, you can sit in one of the cozy cafes<\/strong> and enjoy the charming atmosphere of the old town housed within it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Explore the Old Town<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

A walk through the narrow streets<\/strong> is one of the best things to do in \u0160ibenik. No wonder many famous scenes from \u201cGame of Thrones\u201d<\/strong> were filmed there. Just get lost and discover the city\u2019s most beautiful corners and squares on your own. The old town is not that big, so you are unlikely to get lost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you wish, you can browse the numerous small boutiques<\/strong> and treat yourself to delicious Croatian coffee in one of the many beautiful cafes. As a little highlight, you will discover St. Mary\u2019s Cave<\/strong> \u2013 a small cave under the church and monastery of St. Lawrence on the way to St. Michael\u2019s Fortress. In addition, the old town is home to many interesting galleries and museums, and even a small aquarium<\/strong> hides in one of the many streets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Church of St. Barbara<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The Church of St. Barbara<\/strong> is a hidden gem of \u0160ibenik. Its history goes back to the 15th century, when the respected \u0160ibenik nobleman Radoslav Miheti\u0107 ordered its construction. It is hidden just behind the large cathedral and is definitely an attraction not to be missed. Now this Gothic church is no longer used as a church, but as a part of the city museum<\/strong>, and can also be visited inside. The outer facade is particularly beautiful with a large clock and a statue of St. Nicholas from 1430.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

St. Michael\u2019s Fortress<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

St. Michael\u2019s Fortress<\/strong> is one of the main attractions of \u0160ibenik\u2019s Old Town<\/strong>. Built in the 11th century, this is the oldest fortress in the city. Due to its proximity to the city center, a visit can be easily combined with a stroll through its streets. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the top of the castle is an open stage<\/strong> where various cultural events take place during the season. A walk along the high walls is a must, as from here you have the best view<\/strong> over the old town.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

St. Lawrence Monastery and Garden<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The charming garden of St. Lawrence Monastery<\/strong> is one of the best things to see in \u0160ibenik. This Mediterranean oasis of tranquility is somewhat hidden in the center of the old town, on the way to St. Michael’s Fortress, and is unique of its kind in Croatia. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For over 100 years, this magical place was closed and was only reopened in 2007. During a peaceful stroll through the medieval gardens, covering about 600 square meters, you will discover a wonderful world of plants<\/strong>, many medicinal herbs, spices, and a charming fountain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tip<\/strong>: Be sure to visit the lovely caf\u00e9<\/strong> in the monastery garden. Here you can enjoy delicious coffee and cake while listening to quiet music and soaking up the wonderful atmosphere.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Barone Fortress<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Another important fortress in \u0160ibenik is Barone Fortress<\/strong> (Tvr\u0111ava Barone). It is located just a few minutes\u2019 walk from St. John’s Fort and is open to visitors. From the top, you\u2019ll probably get the best view of \u0160ibenik<\/strong>, the deep blue sea, and St. Michael\u2019s Fortress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Additionally, St. John’s Fort (Tvr\u0111ava sv. Ivana) rises over the old town of \u0160ibenik. It was built in the 16th century and is located about 110 meters above the city. A short walk leads from Barone Fortress to St. John’s Fortress. This fortress is currently under reconstruction, so it cannot be visited until further notice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u0160ibenik Viewpoint<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

A real insider tip is to visit the \u0160ibenik viewpoint<\/strong> on the western coast. It’s located right by the city beach Banj, about 800 meters from the old town, and is easily reached by walking along the promenade. From here you get an almost magical view of the city<\/strong>. In addition, this spot is a popular meeting point to admire \u0160ibenik at sunset and at night. Many people take their best vacation photos here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dalmatian Ethno Village<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Not far from \u0160ibenik, in Amadria Park near the Solaris Hotel, is the Dalmatian Ethno-Village<\/strong>. Being a kind of open-air museum<\/strong>, it shows the life of the locals more than 100 years ago. You will walk through what appears to be a traditional Croatian village and get introduced to local cuisine. In each of the neat stone houses, a range of Croatian dishes<\/strong> are prepared, all of which you can taste right there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tip<\/strong>: Entrance to the ethno village is free, but food prices are on the higher side. In high season, it\u2019s definitely worth booking ahead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

St. Nicholas Fortress<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

St. Nicholas Fortress<\/strong> (Tvr\u0111ava sv. Nikola) is one of the four famous fortresses in \u0160ibenik, situated directly in the sea. Built in the 16th century at the entrance to the St. Anthony Channel (Sv. Ante), it served to protect the city from the sea. Since 2017, St. Nicholas Fortress has been included in the UNESCO World Heritage List<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It should be noted that it is connected to the mainland with a small path, so you can reach it on foot. However, to tour the fortress from the inside, you will need to take a water taxi<\/strong> from \u0160ibenik.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

St. Anthony Channel<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The city of \u0160ibenik is located in a sheltered bay and is connected to the open sea by the picturesque St. Anthony Channel<\/strong>. A must-do is to visit the nature reserve and walk the path along the channel. During your walk, you can enjoy a wonderful view of the old town of \u0160ibenik, the deep blue sea, and the high cliffs of the nature park<\/strong>. If you stay in \u0160ibenik, you shouldn’t miss this amazing excursion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A really cool bar to have a drink is Bono<\/strong>, located right in the heart of the Old Town. Or visit one of the many bars on the promenade\u2014to enjoy the sun during the day and go to a party in the evening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Best Beaches of \u0160ibenik<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If you\u2019re planning a sea holiday\u2014you\u2019ll find wonderful beaches<\/strong> in \u0160ibenik and its surroundings. The most famous beaches in \u0160ibenik<\/strong> are the city beach Banj<\/strong>, a beautiful pebble beach with picturesque views of the old town, and the beaches of Amadria Park<\/strong>.
