And <strong>Tuscany<\/strong> was one of those places I had dreamed about for half my life. Dreams come true if you\u2019re not afraid of long distances and carefully plan your trip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-tuscany-road-trip\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tuscany Road Trip<\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"815\" height=\"623\" src=\"https:\/\/www.journeys6senses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/image.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-14558\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.journeys6senses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/image.png 815w, https:\/\/www.journeys6senses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/image-300x229.png 300w, https:\/\/www.journeys6senses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/image-768x587.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 815px) 100vw, 815px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We chose a slightly unusual route, which will appeal to those who don\u2019t like crowds and lots of people. That&#8217;s why we didn\u2019t go to <strong>Florence<\/strong> and didn\u2019t plan a visit to the <strong>Leaning Tower of Pisa<\/strong>. On the contrary, we added small towns to our route\u2014Arcidosso, Pitigliano, Sovana, and also the coast of Grosseto. We wanted to immerse ourselves in rural Tuscany, see its tiny ancient towns, live with local farmers and restaurateurs amidst nature, enjoying wonderful Tuscan cuisine. So our route was as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ancient <strong>Siena<\/strong>, the endless hills of the <strong>Val d&#8217;Orcia<\/strong> preserve, small hilltop towns like <strong>Montalcino<\/strong>, <strong>Montepulciano, Pienza<\/strong>, tuff towns <strong>Pitigliano, Sovana, and Sorano<\/strong>, the beaches of <strong>Grosseto<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-features-of-a-road-trip-in-italy\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Features of a Road Trip in Italy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The best way to travel around Tuscany is to <strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"rent a car (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.booking.com\/cars\/index.html?aid=1145018\" target=\"_blank\">rent a car<\/a><\/strong> and enjoy the scenery, driving through winding roads curled between hills with vineyards and olive groves. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-to-rent-a-car-in-italy-you-need-the-following-documents\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">To <strong>rent a car<\/strong> in Italy, you need the following documents:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Driver\u2019s license<\/strong>\u2014preferably of the new type, a plastic European sample with a limited validity period (10 years)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Personal credit card<\/strong>\u2014with a credit limit sufficient to pay for the rental and a temporary deposit for the rental car (300-1000 Euros depending on country and season).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Driver\u2019s international passport<\/strong>\u2014for signing the rental agreement with the rental agency.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-toll-roads-and-traffic-rules-in-italy\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Toll roads and traffic rules in Italy<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It seems to me that they are very expensive. Payment is at the barriers at the exit from the autobahn. At the entrance, you need to press a button and take a ticket. We entered the toll roads near Trieste and exited past Florence towards Siena. That&#8217;s over 500 km\u2014it cost about <strong>60 Euros<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Of course, there are also free ones\u2014you can drive through villages, sticking to the speed limit (50 km per hour). But you lose a lot of time this way. So it\u2019s up to you to decide: money or time, meaning free roads\u2014slowly, or toll roads, but quickly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>A few more useful tips:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Try <strong>not to refuel on Italian autobahns<\/strong> \u2014 the fuel price here is the highest. It\u2019s better to do it on regular non-highway roads, at gas stations near towns and villages.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There are many <strong>self-service gas stations<\/strong> in Italy. This means you need a credit card, from which a deposit (100 Euros) is initially taken, and after you refuel, the balance is returned minus the cost of fuel. By the way, prices at these stations are often cheaper than at those with a cashier.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Do not exceed the speed limit<\/strong>\u2014cameras catch everything and fines are high. Stroll down its brick streets, step inside the Sienese Cathedral (Duomo)\u2014a cathedral with a huge dome and striped black-and-white columns. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Be sure to visit the unique Piazza del Campo, which has a specific shape and its own features. They cut the city like a pie into 11 sectors. Visually, this is also very noticeable thanks to stones of different masonry and shades. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you\u2019re lucky, you can see the traditional horse race\u2014the annual Palio, held around the square perimeter twice a year\u2014on July 2 and August 16. Villas are reached by winding paths, lined with ancient cypress trees. Each hill, sown with wheat or rapeseed, comes alive at the slightest breath of wind. It seems as if this blessed land breathes, soaking up the Tuscan sun and mists. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mount <strong>Amiata<\/strong> rises above the valley (Amiata)\u2014in winter, there is even a ski resort here. Then we would go to the little market for juicy fruit and fragrant tomatoes. Bells ring, their chime echoing throughout the area, and hundreds of pigeons take off from the tiled roofs. In the evenings, the walls and streets of <strong>Pitigliano and Sorano<\/strong> are softly lit with yellow lights. There\u2019s also the sea, which I hadn\u2019t even thought about at the time. But we spontaneously decided to celebrate our daughter\u2019s birthday by the sea. So we chose the direction of Grosseto\u2014huge semi-empty sandy beaches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Twelve kilometers from Grosseto is the Marina resort area. Here there are long spacious sandy beaches and a pine forest nearby, calm sea. For summer holidays there are campgrounds and sea attractions. Or in an agriturismo\u2014private mini-farms where they grow vegetables, fruit, livestock, and offer rooms for tourists who want to experience calm and delicious Tuscan life. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Agriturismo<\/strong>\u2014in my opinion, is the best accommodation option if you want to immerse yourself in the rural life of Tuscany. If you\u2019re planning a trip in the summer\u2014choose agriturismo with pools, as it gets very hot here during the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>B&amp;B<\/strong>\u2014Bed and Breakfast\u2014these are basically apartments, but many offer breakfast included. For me, breakfast is an extra option, as it\u2019s great to go out for coffee and pastry in Italy in the morning.
