Ocean beaches, lighthouses, cliffs, small towns, viewpoints \u2014 many places are simply unreachable by public transport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I have rented cars multiple times both on the mainland and on the island of Madeira, tried different vehicles, and found myself in different situations \u2014 so I have plenty to share. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Below are <strong>real tips from personal experience<\/strong> that will save you money, nerves, and time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-car-rental-in-portugal-what-you-need-to-know\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Car rental in Portugal: what you need to know<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Documents for car rental<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Portugal, you will need the following standard list of documents:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>passport<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>driver&#8217;s license (new model plastic licenses are accepted)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>bank credit card in the name of the driver<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>driving experience usually from 1-2 years<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-where-to-look-for-rental-cars\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Where to look for rental cars<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I always searched via aggregators like <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/discovercars.tpo.lv\/K83b4Oex\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">DiscoverCars<\/a><\/strong> or <a href=\"https:\/\/economybookings.tpo.lv\/e3mJYFOy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Economybookings.com<\/strong><\/a> \u2014 it\u2019s convenient to compare prices and terms. Twice I found the best price at <strong>Europcar<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Renting a car at <strong>Lisbon airport<\/strong> is very convenient. All rental desks are in one place. But I do not recommend getting a car for the city:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Lisbon and Porto have excellent public transport. It\u2019s better to buy a day ticket and ride the old trams, funiculars, ferries, etc. This is a unique and interesting way to explore the city.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Parking is difficult and expensive.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A car in the city is more of a hindrance than a help.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I usually rented a car specifically for a route along the coast. With it, you can see beautiful beaches, small towns, castles, and other points of interest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-what-kind-of-car-to-rent-in-mainland-portugal\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What kind of car to rent in mainland Portugal<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.journeys6senses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/20200222_114127-1024x576.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/www.journeys6senses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/20200222_114127-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7888\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.journeys6senses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/20200222_114127-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.journeys6senses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/20200222_114127-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.journeys6senses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/20200222_114127-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.journeys6senses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/20200222_114127-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.journeys6senses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/20200222_114127.jpg 2000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In short \u2014 don\u2019t take one that\u2019s too weak.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>My experience:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Smart<\/strong> \u2014 a great option for two, economical and maneuverable, climbs hills well.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Fiat Punto 1.2<\/strong> \u2014 fine for 3-4 people with small luggage. But a bit weak for Sintra and its winding roads.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you plan to visit Sintra, mountain roads or take long drives \u2014 get an engine from 1.4\u20131.6. You definitely won\u2019t regret it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-what-car-is-best-to-rent-on-madeira\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What car is best to rent on Madeira<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.journeys6senses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/IMG_7394-1024x768.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/www.journeys6senses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/IMG_7394-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-45770\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.journeys6senses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/IMG_7394-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.journeys6senses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/IMG_7394-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.journeys6senses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/IMG_7394-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.journeys6senses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/IMG_7394.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Madeira is a small mountainous island where you can\u2019t get everywhere by bus. <strong>An automobile on Madeira<\/strong> is a necessity if you want to see the most beautiful places and not wait an hour for buses with confusing transfers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>I chose a <strong>Smart ForFour<\/strong> with automatic transmission &#8211; for two, it was simply perfect! Engine 0.9, but a powerful turbo that pulled well uphill. This car also has good directional stability and ABS, it handled well on wavy and morning-slick roads, no skidding.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pickup and drop-off at the airport &#8211; I entered my arrival time and flight number.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>For 7 days in January we spent:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u20ac320 with full insurance &#8211; ~\u20ac45\/day<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>500 km driven &#8211; ~\u20ac65 for petrol<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>It\u2019s better on Madeira to:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>NOT economize on engine power &#8211; class B, engine from 1.5<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Automatic is better than manual<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Why?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>steep climbs<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>sharp hairpins<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>wavy roads<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-deposits-and-insurance\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Deposits and Insurance<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Mainland Portugal:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Honestly, I don\u2019t see much sense in paying extra for full insurance on the mainland. Why?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Here the roads are good, there\u2019s enough space to drive (exceptions: small villages or towns with narrow streets and slopes, but there isn\u2019t heavy traffic there)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You can always find a place to park if you search the map in advance.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Drivers are reasonable, let others pass, no aggressive driving.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Deposits (deposit) for a rental car do not exceed \u20ac300-500 from a credit card &#8211; quite reasonable money.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Madeira<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u20ac1100\u20131500 without full insurance<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s why I took a car with full insurance coverage. I just didn\u2019t have an extra \u20ac1500 to lock for the deposit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-roads-in-portugal\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Roads in Portugal <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.journeys6senses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/ascata-1024x576.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/www.journeys6senses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/ascata-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-46010\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.journeys6senses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/ascata-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.journeys6senses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/ascata-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.journeys6senses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/ascata-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.journeys6senses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/ascata-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.journeys6senses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/ascata.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Mainland Portugal has both free and paid highways.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Portuguese roads are among the best in Europe. Driving is a pleasure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I love exploring the country slowly, so I often choose secondary roads. But when you need to get somewhere quickly \u2014 highways save the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, you can get from Lisbon to Porto in about 4 hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><strong>On Madeira all roads are free.<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The island is connected by a ring road with tunnels, bridges and viaducts. It\u2019s much safer than the old roads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Local drivers:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>experienced<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>nimble<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>don&#8217;t always move to the left lane to let those entering the right lane through<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you\u2019re new, I recommend driving carefully and without rushing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Toll roads and ViaVerde<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.journeys6senses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/image-1-1024x671.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"671\" src=\"https:\/\/www.journeys6senses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/image-1-1024x671.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-57436\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.journeys6senses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/image-1-1024x671.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.journeys6senses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/image-1-300x197.png 300w, https:\/\/www.journeys6senses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/image-1-768x503.png 768w, https:\/\/www.journeys6senses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/image-1.png 1329w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are several road payment systems in Portugal. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Red<\/strong> \u2013 toll roads that can only be paid electronically via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.portugaltolls.com\/en#lb-tabs-tabs-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">EasyToll<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.portugaltolls.com\/en#lb-tabs-tabs-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">TollCard<\/a> (for options aside from Viaverde, read <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.portugaltolls.com\/en\/web\/portal-de-portagens\/home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">PortugalTolls).<\/a> <\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Grey<\/strong> \u2013 toll roads payable by cash or bank card + Viaverde. For cash payment it\u2019s better to have coins or notes up to \u20ac20.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>ViaVerde \u2014 the most convenient option<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is a contactless electronic payment system. You just drive through the lane without stopping.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The rental car will have a device-sensor installed below the mirror.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My experience:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>rental of the device ~\u20ac6 for the first week<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>then ~\u20ac1.5\/week<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>sometimes it may already be included in the price<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>payment is debited from your card several days after you return the car<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For us, ~150 km on the motorway cost about \u20ac7.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>If there is no ViaVerde<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you have passed an electronic toll road without a sensor \u2014 you can pay at a post office <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ctt.pt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ctt.pt<\/a><\/strong>. At <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tolls.eu\/data\/portugal.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">this link <\/a><\/strong>you can find a map of Portugal\u2019s toll roads to understand where and what payment method to expect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Important<\/strong>: Payment within 5 days. The countdown starts 48 hours after driving under the barrier.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-approximate-costs-for-toll-roads\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Approximate costs for toll roads<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><thead><tr><th>Route<\/th><th>Cost<\/th><\/tr><\/thead><tbody><tr><td>Lisbon \u2013 Porto<\/td><td>~\u20ac25<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Bridges in Lisbon (Vasco da Gama\/ April 25)<\/td><td>3.25 \/ 2.25 \u20ac per trip<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-gas-stations-and-fuel\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Gas stations and fuel<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Everything is standard \u2014 card or cash. There are often attendants on duty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once I had an attendant who didn\u2019t want to speak English. A local woman in the queue helped out )) But in general, the Portuguese either speak English or try to help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Fuel prices (approximate)<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Gasoleo<\/strong> (diesel) \u2014 from \u20ac1.55<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Gasolina<\/strong> (petrol) \u2014 ~\u20ac1.8<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Don\u2019t mix them up!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-fines-and-regulations\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Fines and regulations<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Portugal does not like rule-breakers:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>even exceeding the speed limit by 5\u201310% can be expensive<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>fines \u20ac150\u20132500<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>many cameras in cities<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Alcohol<\/strong> \u2014 up to 0.5 per mille is allowed (that\u2019s about a glass of wine or beer).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-parking-in-portugal\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Parking in Portugal<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.journeys6senses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/IMG_5722-1024x682.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/www.journeys6senses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/IMG_5722-1024x682.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7886\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.journeys6senses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/IMG_5722-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.journeys6senses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/IMG_5722-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.journeys6senses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/IMG_5722-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.journeys6senses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/IMG_5722-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.journeys6senses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/IMG_5722-700x465.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.journeys6senses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/IMG_5722.jpg 2000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In big cities it\u2019s best to look for parking right away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>This is what I do:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>I pick a spot on the map<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I look for parking nearby (free if possible, but paid is ok too!)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I park and walk around on foot<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you paid for an hour, don\u2019t leave the car for half a day. Fines are real.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Example of parking prices: <\/strong>paid parking from \u20ac0.3\/hour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Free parking<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most of them are near ocean beaches outside the cities. They are large, often unpaved. Also in small towns such as Nazar\u00e9, Peniche, at Cabo da Roca cape. On Madeira, most of the parking at natural locations or viewpoints is also free. If spaces run out &#8211; drivers park along the road, so as not to obstruct traffic for one lane. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But if there is no parking machine \u2014 it doesn\u2019t mean it\u2019s free. Always look at the signs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-parking-in-sintra-a-story-of-its-own\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Parking in Sintra \u2014 a story of its own<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Parking near <strong>Pena Palace<\/strong> or <strong>Quinta da Regaleira<\/strong> \u2014 is quite a challenge. Too few spots, high payment. Plus, there are lots of hairpin roads in the city and around.
