If you are planning to go skiing in winter, I will share my impressions of traveling to winter Bulgaria. Personal experience of skiing at the Bansko ski resort: when to go, features of the slopes, lifts, price range for ski passes, and where to stay at the Bansko resort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bansko<\/strong> is a popular and quite budget-friendly ski resort in Bulgaria. Low prices for ski passes and accommodation, good cuisine, relatively close location to Ukraine attract lovers of skiing and snowboarding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A few years ago, I skied in Bansko during the New Year and Christmas holidays \u2013 I liked it, although at Bukovel the slopes are more diverse and better maintained than in Bansko.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Slopes and features of skiing areas<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Bansko is located in a mountain valley at the foot of the Pirin Ridge. The highest point of the mountain system is Mount Vihren, which is clearly visible from the balconies of Bansko hotels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Skiing takes place high in the mountains, where a single branch of the gondola cable car and a mountain serpent road lead for those who arrive in their own car and do not want to stand in line for the cable car.<\/p>\n\n\n

During the high season, there are queues for the cable car and on the slope leading to the upper station. Until you push through the narrow throughput of the cable car to the upper slopes and trails, you can stand waiting for a free cabin uphill for an hour. If you go up by car, there are two small parking lots near the chairlifts.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

From the upper station of the gondola cable car, skiers are distributed across different skiing areas by two chair lifts. They lead to the red and black slopes, which are located above the gondola cable car.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beginners who are skiing for the first time generally do not go further up and descend on blue slopes to the gondola’s final station. Here are blue gentle slopes, convenient for beginners and those skiing with small children. There is also a ski school \u2013 on the easiest training slope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The red and black slopes are located on the slopes of Mount Todorka<\/strong> \u2013 the upper station is at an altitude of 2600 m, and one of the slopes descends from Mount Vihren<\/strong>. Some of the most interesting slopes are Shiligarnika<\/strong> and Banderitsa<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In total, Bansko has 70 km of slopes of different difficulty levels and 13 lifts. Not so much space to ski in a very diverse way all week, but for beginners and families with children, it is convenient here to gradually transition from simple slopes to more difficult ones.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Season duration<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The ski season lasts from the end of December until the end of March. Stable snow cover from January through March<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are snow cannons, but in the high season, if there is not much snow and enough skiers, the slopes get moguls literally within a couple of hours and bald patches with rocks appear. We had exactly this experience because it was a warm winter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Advice<\/strong>: If you are an experienced skier, it is not worth going to Bansko for the New Year holidays. On these days, tourists from all over Bulgaria and some from the south of Ukraine gather here. This means you’ll have to ski in a crowd and stand in queues for the lifts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I was in Bansko at Christmas<\/strong>, when the main wave of people had subsided and there weren’t many people. For the first time we got on the slope on January 7 \u2013 it was almost empty. Everyone who came to Bansko had celebrated and did not go skiing. Many had gone home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But if you want to celebrate and also ski \u2013 Bansko can be a good option for a festive trip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ski passes and snowboard and ski rental<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In Bansko you can pay for each lift ride or buy a ski pass \u2013 for 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 9, 13 days. Check current prices on the Bansko website<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is rental of ski equipment<\/strong> for those who do not have their own skis or snowboard. A large rental center is located near the lower station of the gondola cable car. Here it is also convenient to leave boots and skis (snowboard) every evening for storage and drying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Entertainment in Bansko<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A few kilometers from Bansko is the village of Banya<\/strong>, where there are 70 healing thermal springs<\/strong>, with an average water temperature of about +58\u00b0C. Another 17 springs are found in the small town of Dobrinishte<\/strong>, which is also a neighbor of Bansko.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Srebyarniat Izvor<\/strong>” is the most famous spring in Dobrinishte, whose water contains a large amount of silver ions, which have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects on the human body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The “Roman Bath” complex operates: from 9:00 – 20:30. It includes 2 indoor thermal pools with temperatures up to 36 degrees, 1 small open-air pool; there is hydro-massage, jacuzzi, and a children’s slide. Available – Roman bath, Turkish hammam, 2 saunas, Japanese bath (wooden barrels), ice room, massages, fitness room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the evenings in local restaurants \u2013 mehanas \u2013 time flies unnoticed over delicious local dishes and a glass of Bulgarian wine. Prices in the restaurants are low, which pleases those who stay in hotels without a kitchen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you are traveling by your own car \u2013 be sure to plan to stop on the way at the coolest abandoned place in Europe \u2013 Buzludzha<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bansko has a huge selection of hotels on Booking<\/a><\/strong> and most of them are inexpensive \u2013 in the range of 60-80 euros per night for double occupancy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
