In ten days we drove about 1,500 km on California roads. We wanted to see various locations: <strong>desert, ocean, and mountains<\/strong>. We covered this 400 km stretch in three days, with three overnight stops. The road is scenic, lots of beautiful spots, we stopped every half hour to take pictures or walk around.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Before reaching Santa Barbara we turned east and traveled about 600 km to <strong>Death Valley<\/strong>. We spent the whole day on the road, but saw a lot along the way: the airplane graveyard in the <strong>Mojave Desert<\/strong>, typical American towns with single-story development, roadside diners\u2014it\u2019s all as interesting as the national parks themselves.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Two nights in <strong>Death Valley<\/strong>, then another long transfer into the <strong>Sierra Nevada mountains<\/strong> for <strong>Sequoia Park<\/strong> (about 500 km).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>We spent the night in <strong>Fresno<\/strong> and headed for <strong>Yosemite National Park<\/strong>, where we spent two full days and two nights.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>After this, we returned to San Francisco, dropped off the car, and flew home.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Along the way we stopped in cities, stayed in <strong>motels<\/strong> and <strong>campgrounds<\/strong>, watched animals in the wild, talked to locals and fellow travelers. Every 200\u2013300 meters along the highway there are special turnouts and viewpoints. Thanks to these viewpoints, deserted beaches, and awesome landscapes, we stopped every ten minutes, and the 400 km distance took us three full daylight days (!).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Plan at least two, <strong>ideally three days<\/strong> for this stretch to fully enjoy ocean, mountain, and arched river bridge panoramas. In some places there are descents to deserted beaches, you can stop at one of the few caf\u00e9s and savor a cup of coffee with a view of California\u2019s coastal beauty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Tip:<\/strong> Avoid driving the PCH in <strong>spring<\/strong> and <strong>summer<\/strong>. During these months, the central and northern coast may be covered in <strong>fog<\/strong>, and the rainy season can cause <strong>landslides<\/strong>. You can access its grounds for free. Visitors aren\u2019t allowed inside, but it\u2019s working. People come here for picnics, to stroll the marked oceanfront path, or just stop off as travelers who fall in love with this beautiful place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Tip:<\/strong> Intrepid romantics can stay the night at the cozy <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.booking.com\/hotel\/us\/pigeon-point-lighthouse.en.html?aid=1142978&amp;no_rooms=1&amp;group_adults=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">HI Pigeon Point Lighthouse Hostel<\/a><\/strong> on the lighthouse property. Stays are $50 per night in a shared room. Amazing sunset, the beam of the lighthouse at night, and almost tame rabbits hopping around at dawn are guaranteed.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Along the Pacific coast you can also see these lighthouses:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Point Sur Lighthouse<\/strong>, 39.6 km south of Monterey, California, sits atop a 110 m cliff at the tip of the Point Sur promontory.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Piedras Blancas Lighthouse<\/strong> is on the rocky coast near San Simeon, active since 1875 and safely guiding vessels past rocky shores. It once had an impressive glass dome and a first-order original Fresnel lens, and it was 30 meters high.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Point San Luis Lighthouse<\/strong>\u2014located on rocky ground near Avila Beach and Port San Luis. Shark Fin Cove is especially beautiful, with its protruding rock shaped like an arch. We came here in the morning after rain, took a walk above the ocean, then had a long breakfast in a roadside caf\u00e9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Tip:<\/strong> Above the beach is the excellent Whale City Bakery Bar &amp; Grill with tasty breakfasts and coffee. They feel comfortable here\u2014they are protected by law, and some have even made their home right in downtown <strong>San Francisco on Pier 39<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the shore near <strong>San Simeon<\/strong> thousands of elephant seals\u2014a type of the seal family\u2014gather. Their bulky bodies cover vast sandy beaches, and tourists have safe viewing platforms to watch the animals in their habitat just 10 meters away. It\u2019s always busy, but the dunes are so big there\u2019s room for everyone\u2014you can run in the sand and take awesome photos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Tip:<\/strong><br>Before visiting Death Valley, fill your gas tank\u2014there are only 2\u20133 gas stations and fuel is more expensive than usual. There\u2019s also a good restaurant\/bar just across the road.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Personal experience:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s better to plan two nights for visiting Death Valley. The first night you can stay outside the park. We decided to stay in the small town of Pahrump, 40 km from Death Valley in Nevada on the border with the national park. Accommodation here is much cheaper than in valley hotels. The campsite was small and almost full of car-campers with tents. But there were toilets, water, tables, benches, and trash bins\u2014it was all clean. The rest we had\u2014food, wine, tent, and sleeping bags. The tree is enormous\u201484 meters tall, with a trunk at the base 31 meters in circumference.
