These are among the most expensive outdoor museum entry tickets I have ever encountered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Cost is 50\/55\/60 JOD \u2013 70\/78\/85$ for 1\/2\/3 days, respectively. If you pay by bank card at the box office, add +2% to the ticket price.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Visitors with two- or three-day tickets must use them on consecutive days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tourists visiting Petra without staying overnight in Jordan (tours from Sharm El Sheikh or Israel) \u2013 <strong>90 JOD.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Is it worth coming to Petra for just one day (if you are traveling by car)? I believe not \u2013 why?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You won\u2019t have time to see the main sites (not to mention <strong>ALL<\/strong>), simply because they\u2019re far apart.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-accessibility-services-and-safety-in-petra\"><strong>Accessibility, Services, and Safety in Petra<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most Petra routes are designed for a healthy, active person \u2013 basically anyone can handle the simple routes. Or you can use the services of donkeys or camels, which are offered everywhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, if you want to see more, you\u2019ll have to do a lot of walking. There are often stairs up to hilltops. Everyone will try to convince you it\u2019s included in the ticket price. <strong>That\u2019s both true and untrue<\/strong>. The horse owner will ride you, then demand a substantial tip (10\u201330 JOD depending on their boldness). You could refuse, but why make a scene? Just know in advance and decide for yourself whether to ride the easiest part on a horse. In my opinion, don\u2019t fall for this trick!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Club micro electric bus<\/strong> \u2013 this can only take you along a section of the <strong>Main Route<\/strong> \u2013 <strong>from the start of the Siq canyon to the Treasury<\/strong>. Costs 15\/25 JOD one way\/round trip. Club vehicles operate daily 07:00\u201317:00.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Camels and donkeys<\/strong> \u2013 you can ride them along various segments and routes. For example, donkey\/camel from the Treasury to the Main Temple costs 10\u201320 JOD, from there to the Monastery is the same again. You can bargain. In the low season with few tourists, Bedouins (especially late in the day) drop prices \u2013 you can ride a donkey or camel for 5 JOD.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Of course, if you have health issues, don\u2019t climb the rocks, but donkeys can take you up to many viewpoints: for example to the <strong>Monastery<\/strong> (a long and strenuous climb into the hills), the Royal Tombs, and the Palace Temple. Also on the <strong>Al-Khubtha<\/strong> trail \u2013 leading to the upper viewpoint over the Treasury. And I\u2019m glad they haven\u2019t installed them \u2013 these would spoil this open-air museum. In Jordan, they aren\u2019t worried about this, so the ancient monuments look as they should \u2013 without nets, fences, etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Security wise \u2013 police are stationed at many locations, so everything is quiet and calm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-pale-pink-background-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>If you\u2019re not confident in your abilities or feel dizzy \u2013 just don\u2019t try the upper viewpoints and stick to the easy trails.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Bedouins in Petra<\/strong> are both friendly and persistent. They live inside the archaeological site and tourists are their main income. Most often, if you politely refuse with a smile, they smile back and immediately lower the price on everything. But some get annoyed (we did meet a few \u2013 mostly women). Kids will chase you \u2013 &#8220;give me money and biscuits!&#8221; Sometimes they follow for a while begging. Some offer souvenirs and postcards \u2013 many foreign tourists are touched and can\u2019t resist buying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-services-in-petra\"><strong>Services in Petra<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are small <strong>caf\u00e9s<\/strong> at the main route points where you can get tea, juice, and snacks. These spots have <strong>toilets<\/strong>. You can also buy <strong>souvenirs<\/strong> in Petra \u2013 if you bargain a bit, you can get magnets, jewelry, and incense for next to nothing. Bedouins want to sell so badly, they\u2019ll drop the price by several times. Just bargain!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Visitor Center has free brochures and maps and a free toilet.<br>Before the entrance to Petra you can also visit the <strong>Petra Museum<\/strong> \u2013 it\u2019s included in the ticket price.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-to-take-with-you-to-petra\"><strong>What to Take With You to Petra<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Clothes<\/strong> \u2013 according to the season, but dress in layers so you can take off a layer if it gets hot or add one if it gets cold.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Shoes<\/strong> \u2013 comfortable sneakers for all-day walking (with non-slip soles, in case of rain).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In your backpack \u2013 <strong>water<\/strong> (a must) and <strong>snacks<\/strong> (optional), since there are caf\u00e9s inside Petra where you can eat and have tea. But water is a must! If rain is in the forecast, bring <strong>raincoats<\/strong>. It can pour down from the canyon walls soaking you in minutes (and sometimes you\u2019ll even have to wade).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Headwear \u2013 <strong>hat<\/strong>, sunglasses. This means you should arrive at opening (8:00) and leave before 17:00 in winter or 19:00 in spring and fall (before sunset). But in my experience, perfectly planned trips never happen. Try as we might, we arrived at Petra only by noon. By the time we dropped bags at our hotel and bought tickets, half the day was gone. So we bought two-day tickets right away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>One-day tours<\/strong> are usually for those coming in an organized group. I can only sympathize: pay 50 JOD = $70 for a three-hour run through Petra \u2013 not exactly worth the money. But it\u2019s possible, just like sightseeing tours in large cities (Paris, Vienna, Prague, etc.).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So I&#8217;ll list the main attractions you can realistically see in <strong>one, two, or three days in Petra<\/strong>. There\u2019s no point in describing all routes in Petra \u2013 you can read about them on the official website \u2013 <strong><a aria-label=\"Visit Petra (\u043e\u0442\u043a\u0440\u043e\u0435\u0442\u0441\u044f \u0432 \u043d\u043e\u0432\u043e\u0439 \u0432\u043a\u043b\u0430\u0434\u043a\u0435)\" href=\"http:\/\/visitpetra.jo\/Pages\/viewpage.aspx?pageID=144\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Visit Petra<\/a><\/strong>. There you\u2019ll also find descriptions of difficulty levels, average time, and all major sites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s much more useful before your trip to understand what you might have time to see in 1-2-3 days. The route descriptions use ideal time estimates. The narrow entrance is about 1200 meters long, up to 12 meters wide, and 80 meters high. On both sides of the Siq are channels that carried water from Wadi Musa into the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ceramic pipes carried this water along the right channel, while on the left side locals could filter water at various points. The dam prevented floods, and locals could draw water from there. Legend says the Treasury held the riches of a pharaoh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s believed to date from the 1st&nbsp;century BC, is two stories tall (25 meters wide, 39 meters high), and contains three chambers. It is only conducted with an authorized guide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Petra Night Show is a chance to see part of the stone city illuminated by a thousand candles. The route runs from the main entrance through the Siq to the Treasury\u2014about 2 km lined with burning candles in paper lanterns. The scene is incredible!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Along the Siq there\u2019s mystical music; at the end, you\u2019ll see the Treasury illuminated by 1,500 candles. If the Bedouins talk you into the viewpoint above the Treasury (not the topmost), add another hour up and down and for photos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Take note<\/strong>: At the Treasury, you\u2019ll be mobbed by young Bedouins offering to guide you to a mid-level viewpoint for great shots of this iconic monument. They claim to have private viewpoints with carpets and cushions. Time and stamina permitting, this is doable \u2013 we managed it. That\u2019s about 3 km one way, all uphill on stone stairs. And then you have to come back down the same way \u2013 you\u2019ll be tired!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Across from the Ed-Deir Monastery there\u2019s a caf\u00e9 serving cheap tea and snacks \u2013 a good place to rest, enjoy sunset on Ed-Deir\u2019s facade, eat, and head back down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-light-green-cyan-background-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\">All told, in one day you can hike a minimum of <strong>10\u201312<\/strong>, maximum of <strong>16\u201318 km<\/strong>, some of which you can cover by donkey or camel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In two days, you can hike the above \u2013 <strong>Main Route and Monastery Route<\/strong>. And add many branches to various viewpoints. For example, on the Monastery hike you can add the upper trail to the Ed-Deir dome \u2013 <strong>Back Door hiking route to the Monastery<\/strong>. Or from there hike to the desert viewpoint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Important<\/strong>! On the way are tea houses, guides may offer tea and a helpful donkey. Just follow the trail markers up\u2014first stairs, then partly over rocks\u2014to another tea house directly above the <strong>Treasury<\/strong>. Tea is optional.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-route-to-the-ruins-of-al-habis-fortress\"><strong>Route to the Ruins of Al-Habis Fortress<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is another easy hike before you climb to Ed-Deir Monastery \u2013 take the route up to the <strong>ruins of Al-Habis fortress<\/strong>. There are two trails\u2014red, simple and fast, blue is also not hard but gives a great canyon view where the Petra trail mountain valley passes below. The blue route passes a beautiful tea house overlooking the canyon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Al-Habis trail is less traveled near the top, so be careful. To get there, you climb up a steep rise, but your reward is amazing views. <strong>Route length \u2013 3 km one way<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The trail starts between the Colonnade and the Great Temple, outside the Siq gorge. At the High Place Trail sign, head up Nabataean stairs. At the upper viewpoints, there\u2019s a panorama of Petra. Then the route continues to Wadi Farasa and the Lion Fountain, Triclinium Garden, Roman Soldier Tomb, Renaissance Tombs, and Az-Zantur excavations. The path heads into the hills through beautiful rocky scenery. At the end, there\u2019s an alternative viewpoint over the <strong>Treasury<\/strong>. If you wish, you can combine the Indiana Jones trail \u2013 from Al-Madras \u2013 with the High Place of Sacrifice route.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-else-to-see-near-petra\"><strong>What else to see near Petra<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Little Petra<\/strong> \u2013 located 10 km from main Petra. Still free, as it was only recently opened to tourists. Allow a full day to explore Little Petra.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Tomb of Aaron<\/strong> (Moses\u2019 brother) \u2013 only accessible on foot through mountains and canyons. You can shorten the route by jeep (10\u201320 JOD). Walking takes 5\u20136 hours. In low season, accommodation is quite affordable \u2013 for 30\u201340 Euro\/night for two you can get a decent city hotel in Petra. The starter is the best bread and hummus in Jordan. We ordered <strong>camel kebab<\/strong>, Jordanian dishes \u2013 <strong>maqluba<\/strong> (chicken on a bed of rice and veggies), and another tasty dish with small meat pieces in stewed vegetables \u2013 <strong>galaya<\/strong>. Tasty fresh juices.
