The city is most famous as the birthplace of Picasso. All of them are pleasant and safe for tourists, and they are located close to M\u00e1laga\u2019s main attractions. Of course, they each have their own pros and cons. It offers easy access to numerous attractions within walking distance. Plus, it\u2019s close to the bus and train stations, making it easy to reach M\u00e1laga Airport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">M\u00e1laga\u2019s historic center begins east of the <strong>Guadalmedina River<\/strong> and lies between <strong>Alameda Principal and Calle Carreter\u00eda<\/strong>. This triangular area contains numerous museums, palaces, and squares\u2014there\u2019s no shortage of things to see!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All year round, but especially in summer and during holidays, this part of the city is bustling with both tourists and locals. The large pedestrian area prohibits car traffic (keep this in mind if you plan to take a taxi to the airport). The center is filled with a maze of winding, narrow marble-paved streets, lined with elegant classical buildings. Everywhere you look, you\u2019ll find cozy cafes, restaurants, and shops. Many of M\u00e1laga\u2019s major attractions are located here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once a residential area, there are now fewer permanent residents here as many locals have moved to more modern parts of the city. Others have been displaced due to the rise in short-term vacation rentals. Because of this, M\u00e1laga has seen frequent <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.journeys6senses.com\/airbnb-de-zaboroneno\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">protests calling for an Airbnb ban<\/a><\/strong> in recent years. Nevertheless, this district remains absolutely charming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Tip:<\/strong> When booking accommodation in the center, check reviews about the soundproofing of windows and the functionality of air conditioning. Even if you don\u2019t stay in the center, you will likely spend most of your time exploring it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Explore side streets leading to churches, monuments, and plazas such as <strong>Plaza de las Flores<\/strong> and <strong>Plaza Uncibay<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Visit <strong>Plaza de la Constituci\u00f3n<\/strong>, the city\u2019s main square, surrounded by charming terraces and restaurants.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Discover the <strong>Picasso Museum<\/strong>, dedicated to his life and art, located in the old town.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>See major attractions like the <strong>cathedral, Roman theatre, Alcazaba<\/strong>, and more\u2014all within walking distance.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The ornate balconies of the upper windows of the streets in this area are worth your attention. It is conveniently close to the port, train, and bus stations, making it an excellent base for exploring the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This compact district is neatly organized with a grid-like street layout. It\u2019s mostly a middle-class residential area with many small offices and caf\u00e9s. There are several lovely pedestrian streets, numerous galleries, and art spaces, including the <strong>Contemporary Art Museum<\/strong>, which is unfortunately closed until 2026. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Soho is home to the waterfront promenade and <strong>Plaza Marina<\/strong>, a large open space by the sea, as well as an <strong>esplanade<\/strong> running along the port. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The beautiful <strong>M\u00e1laga Park<\/strong> is nearby, offering a great spot for morning or evening walks. The western side of Soho is less polished but more &#8220;local,&#8221; with plenty of simple, everyday restaurants and caf\u00e9s. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The <strong>Guadalmedina River<\/strong> runs along the edge of the district, where you&#8217;ll find two large shopping centers, the <strong>Atarazanas Market<\/strong>, and the well-known Spanish department store <strong>El Corte Ingl\u00e9s<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Crossing the river into the <strong>El Perchel<\/strong> neighborhood takes you into an even more local area, where many M\u00e1laga residents live. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Stop by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/maps.app.goo.gl\/mSQAwDf7KoPr2RzN7\">Antigua Casa de Guardia<\/a><\/strong> for delicious wines and tapas. These areas feature modern high-rise apartments and hotels. <strong>La Malagueta<\/strong> is the first of the two, closest to the Old Town, while <strong>La Caleta<\/strong> lies slightly further east.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I\u2019ve grouped them together since they are adjacent and share similar characteristics. La Malagueta and La Caleta are high-end residential areas, popular among retirees and families.
