I personally found Essaouira to be a captivating place, where you can lose track of time in its laid-back ambiance, soak in the refreshing ocean air, and revel in breathtaking sunsets.

Situated on the Atlantic Ocean’s Moroccan coast, Essaouira is approximately 190 kilometers from Marrakech and 175 kilometers from Agadir. This locale, often dubbed the “City of Winds” or the “Metropolis of Artists,” has become an immensely trendy tourist hotspot, and I have no doubt that it ranks among the most beautiful gems in Morocco.

The 18th-century old town, known as the Medina of Essaouira, is a well-known UNESCO World Heritage Site. In the harbor of the port you can see a large number of traditional blue boats.

This is one of the most photogenic places in Essaouira – people are constantly taking pictures here because the color of the boats is really very beautiful. But the smell here, especially at the end of the day, is just awful. This is where the fish is unloaded and often cleaned. You will also see a lot of intestines around.

It is also worth visiting the port in the morning, when the daily fish market is open in Essaouira. It is located closer to Mulay Hassan Square and a small park near it. The café is very simple: blue tables and chairs, with a grill behind the wall, where they cook freshly caught fish and seafood. The flavors of seafood stimulate the appetite, and the simplicity of the dishes emphasizes their natural taste.

We ordered several dishes – fresh grilled fish, shrimp and baby octopus, salad and fresh vegetables. This is a traditional house built in the shape of a well, inside which there is a garden with a fountain, but many converted riads even have swimming pools. The riads are located in Medina, the historic center of the Moroccan city. It is a square-shaped building with several floors. Narrow staircases lead to each floor – no elevators are allowed here (hello, big suitcases!).

Each floor has a balcony overlooking the courtyard, and rooms are located around the perimeter of the balcony. Riads come with private rooms with a private shower. There are riads – hostels with shared rooms and facilities. In addition, the price for such accommodation is not very high – on average 30-40 euros per night for two.

But such hotels are very cozy and beautiful: antique furniture decorates the rooms and corridors, a light mosquito canopy over the bed, traditional carpets and lanterns.
