Bukovel in Winter – Ski and SPA Relaxation

Bukovel in Winter – Not Just Skiing, But Also SPA Relaxation

Bukovel in winter is not only about skiing but also about relaxing in SPA hotels, combining the pool with snowy fun. And there are plenty of exciting activities here for both adults and children.

Many people want to go to Bukovel in winter, but because of the high accommodation prices, they postpone this trip year after year. I have already written about how to save money in Bukovel, including where to look for affordable accommodation.

Below is my personal experience from multiple winter trips to Bukovel. And answers to the main questions: how to avoid queues and crowds, when is the best time to visit Bukovel in winter and why, where to stay for convenience, and what transport I use to get to the resort.

Who is Bukovel Best Suited For When It Comes to Skiing or Snowboarding?

For everyone who doesn’t like skiing on bumps or bare slopes. Or, on the contrary – for those who don’t know how to ski off-piste. Freeriders won’t find it interesting here – they prefer Dragobrat with its wild slopes.

For skiers like me – I come during weekdays, ski all five days as much as I want, and go home happy and satisfied on the weekend – Bukovel is perfect. Because here there are over 60 km of slopes and excellent infrastructure. This combination doesn’t exist at other ski resorts in Ukraine. Either there are good lifts but few slopes, or, like at Dragobrat, there are varied slopes but no unified ski pass.

If you plan to teach your child to ski, you can first try some smaller slopes, like those in Izky (Eco Resort Izky) or Polyana. And then move on to Bukovel, because here you’ll find not just skiing, but lots of other entertainment, which I’ll write about below.

Winter Season – When is the Best Time to Visit Bukovel?

The winter season begins when there is fresh snow or when it is cold enough to operate snow cannons. In Bukovel, it starts in early December and ends in late March.

  • High season – from December 19 to March 16
  • Holiday season – from January 2 to January 6
  • Low season – until December 18; from March 17 onward

I usually choose to ski at the end of March, right after March 17 and before school holidays start on March 22. For me, this is the cheapest and most beautiful season. We tried going in December before the holidays, but the snow wasn’t great because most of it was artificial.

Once we went in February, and our trip coincided with severe frosts. Sitting on a lift when the temperature is -20℃ is not very pleasant. And the snow during such severe frost is very hard – honestly, I didn’t like it much.

Bukovel March 20, 2018 – lots of snow!

Snow in March is a matter of luck, but if you’re lucky (and we were lucky), you get a really nice fluffy snowball, and then sunny days come. It’s just perfect for skiing. And there aren’t as many people at this time as in winter.

Prices at the resort increase accordingly depending on the season, which also affects the choice of when to go skiing.
And my birthday is also on the 20th of March – so everything coincided and I really like it.

Is It Worth Renting Skis in Bukovel’s Rental Shops?

There is no clear answer because if you have your own ski equipment, of course, you should use it.

But if you don’t – I recommend renting skis at Bukovel rental shops. Here, you get guaranteed service and proper treatment of equipment. Once, I decided to save money (it wasn’t even a big difference) and rented in Yablunytsia. The skis were bad, and they refused to replace them until I argued. Since then, I always rent near lift No. 2 – everything has always been fine. I have my own helmet because wearing someone else’s on my head is unpleasant.

In Bukovel, there are three categories of skis/snowboards: Class A, B, C. A – newest (1 year old), C – most worn out. I always take Class B (2–3 years old) because they are the best in terms of price/quality ratio. The same applies to kids’ sets – skis, boots, poles, helmet, or snowboard, helmet, boots.

Check prices on Bukovel’s official website because they change every season. You can compare them with other rental prices if you want.

Just like with ski passes, rental discounts apply: the more days you rent, the cheaper the daily rate.

How to Avoid Lift Queues in Bukovel?

The answer is simple – avoid lifts No. 1, 2, and 7 on weekends. These are the most crowded because they are in the very center of Bukovel.

How to do it? Start skiing at lifts near stations No. 8 and 11 if you have a car – it’s the easiest way to get there. Or go to lift No. 5, which is fast and much less crowded than lifts 1 and 2.

Or try lift No. 14, which is served by a free Bukovel bus.

Even if you’re a beginner, you should still check out lift No. 8 and the nearby slopes. There are blue slopes here, and the upper station connects well with them. Don’t be afraid – just study the map beforehand.

Where is the Best Place to Stay in Bukovel?

Of course, it depends on your budget. Ideally – close to the slopes, so you can hit the fresh corduroy in the morning, avoid transfers, and live the dream of every skier – in a ski-out hotel, where you start skiing right from the door and return in the evening the same way.

But everyone has different options. If you want to stay directly at the resort, I recommend looking at these hotels, which also have SPA centers (it seems like most of them do now because pools with mountain views are in huge demand – and it’s truly amazing to swim in a pool or sit in a jacuzzi with stunning mountain views).

These hotels have the highest prices, but they offer SPA and ski-out – direct access to slopes and lifts. And that, as you know, is expensive everywhere, not just in Bukovel. It’s one thing to ski straight from your hotel and then head to the SPA to relax your muscles, and another thing to commute from a distant hotel. So here are the top-rated SPA hotels in Bukovel:

GirskiDelux

GirskiDelux is a hotel with two pools – indoor and outdoor (heated), where you can spend the whole day. It’s convenient that the warm outdoor pool is accessible from inside. The SPA works 24/7 – you can even swim at night.

The hotel has great design, spacious rooms with comfortable bathrooms, and delicious food in the restaurant. Complimentary coffee/tea in the room is replenished. They allow pets for free and treat them well. There is a small kids’ room (more suitable for 2–4-year-olds) located in the restaurant.

The hotel is located a 5-minute walk from slope 7A. There are three parking lots (one covered and two open) included in the price, as well as a free EV charging station.

Bukville SPA Hotel

Bukville Hotel is 200 m from lift No. 1 – you can easily walk in ski boots. It’s fairly new, with modern rooms. There’s a storage area for skis and boots near the reception. Rooms are warm, tea and coffee are replenished during cleaning every few days.

There are small balconies, though not all with a great view. Another advantage – the hotel has a cozy European restaurant. Breakfast was included but optional. There’s also a parking lot. If you arrived by train – the shuttle stop from Tatariv and Yaremche is nearby. Taxis are also available. We came by car – the hotel had its own parking.

The SPA here includes a jacuzzi and a panoramic pool with mountain views. It’s small but clean and pleasant. There’s also a kids’ pool. The hotel has an elevator and a large playroom on the second floor. The restaurant was great, cozy, and had varied tasty dishes.

SPA-hotel Bukville

Hotel Bukville is located 200 m from the 1st ski lift. From here you can easily reach the slopes in ski boots, carrying skis on your shoulders. The hotel is quite fresh, the rooms are decorated in a modern style. There is a place to store boots and skis near the reception. The rooms are warm, tea and coffee are replenished during cleaning every few days.

The rooms have small balconies, although not all of them offer a beautiful view. Another advantage is that the hotel has its own small cozy restaurant with European cuisine. Breakfast was included in the price of accommodation, but it is optional. The hotel has its own parking lot – there is a place to park your car. If you arrive by train – there is a minibus stop from Tatariv and Yaremche nearby. Taxi drivers also hang out there. We arrived by car – the hotel has its own parking lot.

The SPA in this hotel is a jacuzzi and a swimming pool with a panorama of the mountains. And although it is small – it is always clean and pleasant to steam in any weather. There is also a pool for children. The hotel has an elevator, a large game room on the 2nd floor, etc. In addition, the restaurant was beautiful, cozy and had a variety of delicious dishes.

I was happy to return from the wheelchair to a warm room, take a shower and fall into a warm bed. In general, my sincere recommendations – the hotel is solid ***.

Where to Find Cheaper Accommodation in Bukovel?

In the village of Polyanytsia, you can stay just 1 km from the lifts. It’s cheaper, but choose the closest hotels because walking from far away is impossible, and shuttles are rare and inconvenient. Taxis will make your stay more expensive, so it won’t be worth it.

Polyanytsia stretches for several kilometers along the road from Tatariv to Bukovel. It’s divided into areas: Vyshnia (next to Bukovel), Stayishche (1 km), Rosish (1.5 km), Nuriv and Hrun (2 km), Prysylok (3 km). Walking from the distant ones is unsafe because there are no sidewalks. If you’re without a car, choose closer or arrange transfers with hotel owners (around 50 UAH per person one way).

Hotels in Yablunytsia and Tatariv

Another nearby and affordable option is Yablunytsia, 10 km from the lifts. There’s a separate road to Bukovel built as an alternative to the Yaremche route.

There are rarely traffic jams, so you can quickly reach the resort and park (from 75 UAH/hour). Prices for a double room in mid-January start at 900 UAH/night. There are rentals, cafes, and small shops in the village.

Entertainment in Bukovel – For Adults and Kids

Apart from skiing, Bukovel has plenty of fun activities. You can visit Hutsul Land to see domestic animals and learn about Hutsul life. Ride a giant swing or try local dishes at the restaurant. Or relax at Voda SPA if your hotel doesn’t have a pool. There are many activities for kids too.

Voda-Club SPA Complex

Voda SPA has a large outdoor heated pool connected to an indoor one, plus saunas (Finnish, European, salt) and three outdoor jacuzzis.

I loved it in March; in summer I didn’t try it because the lake was enough. But in cold seasons, Voda is perfect for a few hours or the whole day.

We bought a 3-hour ticket – enough to enjoy hot pools, tea at the water bar, saunas, and the salt room.

In summer, the area doubles: floating platforms on the lake, water slides, even banana rides – almost like a beach.

Bukovel Water Park – “Mavka”

Opened in 2025, the biggest water park in Ukraine. We tested it in late March on my birthday trip.

It’s fun, though prices are high compared to Therme Bucharest or Szechenyi Baths. We took the cheapest plan – 4 hours in the main zone (no SPA) for 1700 UAH per adult. SPA zone costs 2500 UAH for 4 hours. Check full-day prices on the Bukovel website.

Outdoor pools have water at +35°C, with jacuzzis and a swim-up bar. There’s also a wave pool (+26°C) with waves once an hour for 15 minutes. Outdoor steam sauna available too.

I liked the pools located outside with a water temperature of +35 degrees. There are two separate ones – a larger one and a smaller one. The larger one has a whirlpool, as well as a jacuzzi area and a bar with a built-in bar. The smaller one only has a jacuzzi area.

Adults will also find the large wave pool interesting – the water in it is +26 degrees. Once an hour, the waves are turned on, on which you can swing for 15 minutes. The rest of the time it is just a pool located inside under the roof.

There is a steam sauna outside – you can warm up if you are a little cold.

There are separate pools for children, small slides. Also a large area of slides for children and adults. I’m not into slides, so I can’t say anything about them – I liked relaxing in the outdoor pool with a view of the mountains – it’s a blast!

Hutsul Land – Zoo, Hutsul Culture, and Giant Swings

A great spot for kids and adults: a petting zoo, observation decks, swings, cheese shops, and Carpathian souvenirs. You can also see how wool blankets are made, join cheese-making workshops, and meet Scottish cows.

And you can also eat at Kolyba – the mushrooms, banosh, borscht, and dumplings here were very tasty.

How to Get to Bukovel?

We’ve traveled both by train and car – we prefer the car because we take our dog, and we can stop anywhere to see more places along the way.

If by train – choose Tatariv station (closest to Bukovel). Then take a winter shuttle bus to the resort. Schedule is on Bukovel’s official site. Ticket price: 100 UAH one way.
