Budget ski resorts in Eastern Europe

Affordable ski resorts in neighboring European countries – Poland, Slovakia and Czech Republic. There is good service here and vacation prices are lower than in the Alps.

There is already snow on the Polish and Slovak slopes. In Slovenia, in addition to the mountains, there are thermal spas, and the country’s compact size allows you to see landmarks during your vacation. And the Czech ski hills (because it is difficult to call them mountains) combine well with tasting the best beer in the world. And most importantly, the local slopes are suitable for beginners and children.

Let’s take a look at how much a vacation at these resorts costs and what infrastructure is available. We will also consider the advantages and disadvantages.

Poland, Zakopane

Season duration: from December to the end of March.

Poland offers skiing holidays at moderate prices. Poland is home to the northern slopes of the High Tatras, where there is enough snow in winter to ski or learn to ski or snowboard. Poland’s largest ski resort is – Zakopane, where there is a sufficiently wide choice of slopes and very good hotels. And all of this comes with a pleasant price-to-quality ratio.

Slopes and features of the skiing areas:

There are 10 separate skiing areas in Zakopane: Kasprowy Wierch, Szymoszkowa Polana, Nosal, Gubałówka, Kalatówki, Antałówka, Kościelisko, Budzowski Wierch, Butorowy Wierch, Koziniec.

For beginners for learning, it is worth looking toward gentle slopes Antałówka, Koziniec, as well as the lower section of Nosal. And also on the routes Kalatuvky, Budzivskoho Verkhu, Kościeliska.
Kasprowy Wierch – the most popular slope in Poland. Its northeastern slopes are popular with skiers for their beautiful runs among Goral fluffy fir trees.
For advanced skiing on black runs belong the slopes of the Kasprowy Wierch and the run on the mountain’s northern slope Nosal.
Nosal – also a lively ski area: located at the lower lift stations are restaurants, bars, equipment rental, service, sports shop, ski school, parking lots.
Ski area Harenda equipped platter lifts, which may not immediately appeal to beginners. You need to know how to maintain your balance when going up on a surface lift. Although they are not difficult to get used to. There is a snow–park, ski school, ice rink.
On the mountain slopes Kornikova and the slopes of the mountain Banya more than ten ski lifts operate.
Polyana Shymoshkova: slopes for beginners and experienced skiers with a maximum vertical drop of 280 m.

The total length of the ski runs is 65 km; more than 60 lifts operate on them, and the maximum vertical drop is 940 metres.

Most of the runs have artificial snowmaking systems, and many are illuminated for night skiing. There are also 50 km of cross-country ski trails.

Accommodation in Zakopane:

Zakopane is surrounded on all sides by mountains, where ski areas are located. Therefore, staying in one of the hotels or apartments in the center of Zakopane will be the most optimal option.

Winter activities in Zakopane:

In addition to being a renowned ski resort, Zakopane is also a cultural center Gorals – an ethnic group of Poles living in this area.

You can visit Chochołów – a village where an ethnographic complex, consisting of wooden Highlander houses built back in the 19th century. Some people still live in them today.
Village Bukowina Tatrzańska is known for its unforgettable mountain panoramas and ski jumps.
Kasprowy Wierch Cable Car – is the only high-altitude cable car in Poland. The journey offers an abundance of beautiful views and leaves unforgettable impressions.
The upper station of the cable car is located at an altitude of 1,959 meters – a panorama of the Polish Tatras opens up. AndAqua Park Antalowka – an open-air complex with a thermal pool containing hydrogen sulfide-rich mineral water, a waterfall, and a roller coaster. Prices on the aqua park’s website.
In Zakopane, you can take a walk through the national park – go hiking or horseback riding with guides.
In the evening – there are discos and nightclubs for those who still have the energy to dance after skiing on the slopes.

How to get to Zakopane:

You can get from Kraków to Zakopane by private or rental car – 120 km.
You can search for buses on the website Omio.com.
Flixbus runs from Krakow to Zakopane every half hour and costs very little – from 7 to 9 euros.
Buses Majerbus also connect Krakow with Zakopane – timetable and prices on the carrier’s website.
Also, don’t forget about trains PKP – 2 hours on the road and no traffic jams.

Slovakia, Jasná – Low Tatras

Season duration: from December to the end of March

Slovak resorts are distinguished by low prices combined with European service. It can quite reasonably be considered a very good alternative to the Alps at an affordable price.

There are two main skiing regions in Slovakia – the High and Low Tatras. Both are equipped with modern lifts and excellent slopes.

Jasna – one of the most popular Slovak resorts, located in the Low Tatras. Here, there are slopes for both beginners and advanced skiers. The sightseeing and wellness program offers thermal springs, historic castles, and ancient towns. You can spend an interesting, eventful week here, learn to ski in the mountains, and see many other things. But it is not as expensive as at other European resorts.

Slopes and skiing areas:

The Jasná resort offers excellent conditions for beginners: there are gentle slopes, numerous lifts, and an instructors’ school.

The central mountain – Chopok, on whose northern and southern slopes there are 57 km of slopes. All the slopes are conventionally divided into four skiing areas:

Otupné (1140-1430 m) – an area for beginners;
Záhradka (1030-1450 m) – “red” runs leading from Konský Grúň and Prehyba;
Chopok North (1230–2020 m) — mostly “red” runs, with a couple of “black” ones; the runs are up to 2 km long;
Chopok South (1160–2020 m) — “red” and “black” runs, skiing at elevations above the mountain forest line, with opportunities for freeriding.

The lower lift station is located at an altitude of almost 1,000 m, which guarantees snow during the skiing season. And if the winter has little snow, the main runs are equipped with artificial snowmaking systems.

There are 23 lifts operating at the Jasna resort: 8 chairlifts equipped with snow covers and heated seats, 10 T-bar lifts, and 11 gondola lifts that are fully enclosed against the elements and connect the northern and southern slopes into a single ski area.

On the highways – Khopok north – Bila Way and Zahradky, 990 m long, is equipped with lighting for evening skiing, which is not included in the ski pass and is paid for separately. A wonderful snow park has been set up for snowboarders on the Chopok North and Otupné slopes.

Accommodation at the Jasná resort:

There are several villages near Jasná where you can book accommodation.

Ideally, book a room in one of the hotels Demänovská Valley, which is located near the lower lift station. Prices here are higher than in the villages located slightly farther down (near the highway and Liptovský Mikuláš). But undoubtedly, the convenience of staying near the lifts has its own advantages: in the morning, put on your skis and head straight out to ski.

Hotels in Demänovská Valley:

Hotel Jasná≫ – The hotel is conveniently located close to the blue ski run and lift. The hotel itself is small, neat, clean, and features a cozy interior design. There is a sauna, jacuzzi, and relaxation room, and the delicious food is also highly praised here.
Chalet Norvinga Jasná≫ – apartments with all amenities; the chalet is very conveniently located, 150 meters from the slopes, with a beautiful view of the mountain. There is a private sauna—simply perfect in the evening after a day of skiing.
BÚDA Jasná≫ – Beautiful, fully equipped apartments with a nicely decorated balcony for breakfasts. Located right next to the slope, which is also perfect for those who have come to ski in the Chopok area.

A more budget-friendly accommodation option in Liptovský Mikuláš – 15 km from the slopes. Or in the villages Zavazhna Poruba, Holovany, Sviatyi Krest. Many hotels and apartments provide a transfer from Liptovský Mikuláš. In addition, a free skibus.

Hotels in Liptovský Mikuláš:

Ski passes:

The single seasonal “GoPass” ski pass, valid at the resorts in both the Low and High Tatras. The price of a 6-day 2024/2025 season ski pass starts at €250 (depending on the month and public holidays). Ski passes can be purchased on the GoPass website.

The ski pass also serves as an admission ticket to the water park Tatralandia. The ski pass can be used only once a day—in ski resorts or at one of the water parks. In my opinion, this is a super-attractive opportunity, especially if you are planning a holiday with children.

Ski equipment rental:

A ski set (skis, boots and poles) or snowboard (board plus boots) costs from €131 for adults and from €92 for children for 6 days of skiing. A cash deposit is required for rental (minimum €50). Details and rental terms on the Jasná ski resort website.

Entertainment near Jasná:

Jasná’s infrastructure is so diverse that you don’t have to worry about having nothing to do besides skiing. You can combine skiing on the slopes with relaxing in high-altitude café, plus evening entertainment après-ski – clubs, restaurants, fitness pools and saunas.

The ski resort collaborates with the thermal water park Tatralandia in Liptovský Mikuláš: buses run from Jasná to the water park according to the timetable. Holders of a multi-day ski pass can exchange an unused day for admission to the water park.
Bešeňová Thermal Park is located in the town of Ružomberok, 30 km from Jasná. Here, you can relax in the pool, enjoy a sauna, and order peeling and massage services.
You can also visit Demänovská Cave – it is part of a huge underground karst complex in the Demänovská Valley. The cave is illuminated, highlighting stalagmites and stalactites that are thousands of years old.

How to get to Jasná:

You can get to Jasná, first of all, by car — this is, of course, the most convenient option.
You can also travel by bus Flixbus — from Uzhhorod to Poprad, Slovakia. Then take a train to Liptovský Mikuláš (then transfer to your hotel). Or take a bus from Uzhhorod to Košice Flixbus, and then by train Slovak Railways.

Czech Republic, Špindlerův Mlýn

Season duration: from December to the end of April.

Although the Czech Republic is not a mountainous country, it does have almost-mountains — small hills where the Czechs have built several ski resorts. One of the most popular is Špindlerův Mlýn, which is located northeast of Prague on the border with Poland.

Those who want to try skiing for the first time will enjoy it here, as will those who want to see the surrounding Czech castles. Or you can simply enjoy a beer while taking in beautiful views of the Czech mountain peaks.
